Topics I've Started
15 April 2008 - 10:20 AMOakland University (aka my school) was placed on Lockdown on Sunday and Monday because of threatening messages found in three bathrooms on campus. The messages claimed an attack on OU that would be worse than the Virginia Tech shootings. These threats were found last week and it took the campus police a couple days before addressing the situation. The campus was completely closed except for the residence halls. The asked the housing staffs to volunteer extra shifts to increase security within the halls. Of course, if staff felt uncomfortable, they didn't have to be on campus. Anyway, there was 24 hour security for both RAs and Nightwatch. So, nothing happened, so school was re-opened today, Tuesday.
It seems kind of pointless to me to re-open school the day after the percieved threat. There were some other colleges in Chicago that recieved similar threats, and they are remaining closed until the find the people the made the threats. Also, the Admissions department on OU's campus is having local high school students come to visit OU, the day after a freaking lockdown. Also, the real aniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings is this Wednesday (say a prayer for those who were victims). Also, the Columbine shooting is April 19th. What is the point with all these shootings happening in April, especially when it is so close to the end of the school years?
15 February 2008 - 03:03 PMWell, at the beginning of this academic calender( fall semester), Oakland University in Rochester, MI did not receive its funding from the state of Michigan. So the Board of trustees decided to raise tuition 13.9%(one of highest in the country) and made a clause. The clause stated, that upon receiving the money from the state, the university would refund the students the difference of tuition because of the increase.
Now that you know the background story, here is the up to date end. The school received 4.8 million dollars from the state which was the total the student body paid because the tuition increase. Despite the clause I described, the Board of Trustees is thinking about using the money to improve the campus instead of paying back the students. Another sneaky thing the Board is doing, is that they changed their monthly meeting from the first Saturday of February to February 28th, during the winter break, when the students will be away. This is a move that clearly shows the board's hidden agenda.
What do you think about the issues at hand? Should the school refund the students or improve the campus? What do you think of the Board of Trustee's actions?
(and yes, this my school and I am qualified for the reimbursement)
08 February 2008 - 02:14 PMI would like everyone to pick out their favorite war movies of all-time. After you have picked your favorite, please give some reasoning. Here are some example of reasons: authenticity, actors, scenes, context, period, etc.
My favorite war movie is "To Hell and Back". Most of you have never heard of this film since it was made in 1955. Well, it stars Audie Murphy and is one of the most inspirational movies ever made, and did I mention it was all based on a true story. Not some of it, the entire movie is based on fact. The movie takes place during World War II, and is about a small kid who was rejected by all the armed services, except the army. This kid who was rejected by most services and almost kicked out of the army because his size, eventually became the most decorated army soldier of the war. Did I mention that the small kid is Audie Murphy, that's right, the actor is portraying himself in a movie about himself, can't get more accurate then that. It is truly a great film.
So, how about the rest of you, what is your favorite? and Why?
01 February 2008 - 02:14 PMI was suprised that not a single post has been given about Global Conquest 2k8, so I will do the honors. This is a great even held at Hell Survivors in June. I went to there last year and had the time of my life, along with a little over a thousand other players. It is very similar to the Monster Game, however the players are broken up into more teams representing different countries.
