25 September 2007 - 07:59 AMWell after waiting forever for a c-series barrel in ion threads to come out (which they still haven't), I went with a deadly wind carbon fiber barrel (renamed Fibur CF barrel currently). I compared my Deadlywind barrel with a friends carbon fiber stiffi switch barrel (both are 16"). The first thing you notice when holding both barrels is the texture difference. The Deadlywind is smooth on the outside and inside of the barrel, the stiffi feels like it has ridges on the outside, and the inside isn't as smooth as the deadlywind. (You can use both a rubber and cloth squeegie on a deadlywind barrel). Other differences are in the control bore, the stiffi switch kit uses 2 inch control bore, the deadlywind uses freak inserts which gives it 5" of control bore. Now I didn't have anything to actually weigh the difference of weight, but me and my friend both agree that the deadlywind with an aluminum freak insert felt the same weight as stiffi, if not lighter (but slightly). So how quite is the barrel, when I went to chrono my gun, the first comment I got was how quite my gun was. Again I don't have and audible meter to test it vs. the Stiffi, but it is just as quite as a stiffi, the deadlywind has spiral porting and 60 holes.
Shooting comparison: Using same gun (blackcell ion, firebolt, scenario dreams board, cp reg., qev, using lp hpa, egg) with same paint, just switching the barrels out (using same control bore size), ball on ball.
At 25 ft. both the stiffi and deadlywind were even.
At 50 ft. both the stiffi and deadlywind were even.
At 75 ft. the deadlywind hit 2 more times than the stiffi
At 100 ft. the deadlywind hit 4 more times than the stiffi.
I don't claim to be a expert, but it seems the longer control bore is making a larger difference over a longer range shot.
The weight and quiteness of both are to close to be a main factor in choosing one over the other. But the overall quality, smoothness of the carbon fiber inside and out and ability to use freak inserts (5" control bore) make the deadlywind a better arguement for choosing it over the stiffi switch kit.
Stiffi switch kit $175-200
Deadlywind carbon fiber barrel (Fibur CF barrel) $90.00
Freak inserts $12.00/ ea or get a freak insert boremaster aluminum kit $70-75
