25 January 2008 - 11:23 AMThanks for the quick replys! I dont have any negative thoughts or feelings about those who feel different than I do about reasons to join the military, the best way to describe how I feel about it though is that I am not wanting to join specifically because I want to shot something/ blow something up. That said, if my safety or the safety of others are put at risk, I know I would not hesitation to do what would need to be done. I hope that means I am prepared for the possibilities.
I believe the ASVAB is indeed a 1-100 score test with 50 as the average so I also hope that this can go a long way to help me if i decide this is what I want to do. As far as what comes next, I have no idea what is available to me or what do I need to get done- I am not familiar with OCS or the GT if you dont mind explaining that. Thanks again guys! Long time lurker, just finally found something worth adding too
24 January 2008 - 11:35 PMHey there, great thread so far! It is a very interesting read as I have considered a military option for a bit bit never had a comfortable environment to gather useful (and reliable) information. I know similar questions have been asked so far but since everyone here has been so good about giving personal attention, I thought I might just give this a shot.
I want to fly! This has been a dream of mine since a kid and fortunately, I haven't gotten over it yet. How I fly isnt that important to me, though i think my preference is Air Force right now. I thought I might enjoy piloting a C-5 Galaxy since I got into one at a air show once and got to talk to the loadmaster about typical deployment scenarios ( pre 9-11 ) such as humanitarian work like flying a planefull of baby food to Australia, and enjoying the downtime there before flying back 5 days later. Also I had found myself pulling over recently to watch in awe a couple of Raptors flying some maneuvers over at Tinker Air Force Base- my hometown is Midwest City, OK
Anyway that rose colored outlook of being stationed instate of where I already live, awesome pay, doing good work for others that doesn't have a high risk of having putting me in a position of kill or be killed, and having a job that basically lets you travel and see the world in a form of personal mini-vacations is very alluring.. though I would LOVE that look to be put in the real world perspective if anyone has experience already
That being said what I am looking for is a career job flying military, see how far I can get with that, then probably retire and work civ airlines for the $$ and just for kicks and giggles see how much I finally can retire with.
What I've got to work with- age 24, 5'11, 175pds
currently working on a bachelor's degree- Aviation Management with safety option
ACT score 25
ASVAB score 97, aced all phys tests
I wear glasses as I am nearsighted (need them to see far away) but like I said, during testing I passed the vision/depth perception part no problem (didnt expect that..)
I would love the get surgery so I dont have to wear glasses anymore and the means are available to me but the problem is that I have been told conflicting things are whether or not this will disqualify you, this is the only reason why I havent done it yet.
Thanks again guys! Any insight, information, and/or options are welcome and encouraged! Like I said, I just hadnt before had a place I felt comfortable looking into this where I also didnt feel pressured to do something I dont want to do- I'm one of those guys who doesnt like the car salesman hassling just because I showed an inkling of interest that you get from recruiters.
