Personally, I think that grenades are one of the most overlooked advantages in paintball. We all forget to use them because we're so busy getting our guns off.
When I remember to pull one out, cool stuff happens on the field.
Our most-used field, the SO Retribution Field, is about 65% canopied-over with Silver Maples. So, it's virtually impossible to 'nade beneath that kind of cover. Once you get out of the cover, though, it's 'nade city. I love the things. Since the invention of the Atomic Ordnance Big Boy, I've had a lot of fun with grenades.
Nothing makes a better story than a grenade hit.
Regarding a field position: you guys have some great thoughts. I can definitely see it working, depending on the field. I'd combine the 'nade position with one of the Heavy or Medium Rifelmen positions so that you can call up the grenades when the situation warrants.
I've always wanted to see a grenade launcher that works. It's so hard to throw grenades from behind cover. And, yes, I've extensively tested the whatchyacallit launcher (now I remember: Scepter) and it didn't work worth a dang.
