Feel free to add something if I've forgotten it.
I see it every single day out there. Someone forgets to condom up, and when told to do so, they swing their gun up and around (pointing it at 5 people's faces enroute) and then start looking for the condom. Why was keeping it pointed at the ground such an issue?
Some basic rules for this situation:
1.Freeze. Move your finger up and away from the trigger WITHOUT moving the gun.
2.Move the gun downward till it's pointed at the ground (if it isn't already). Keep it there.
3.Begin fitting condom.
note: CONDOM. There is no excuse for a plug. You can easily find a condom for under $10 and it's the most important piece of equipment in the game (except perhaps the goggs). If you play paintball and have purchased a marker of your own, then you can afford the proper safety equipment.
4.If you need to find your condom first, then unscrew the barrel (without turning the gun upward) and set the gun down on the ground.
Muzzle control should be taken very seriously. In all cases, you should drop whatever else you are doing and focus on your marker as if it's a live grenade. And when someone tells you, "HEY! GET A CONDOM ON THAT $#%%##@ THING, NOW!!!", they are in fact asking as politely as they should.
One final thought: When a ref, player, or field owner tells you to get your gun plugged or your mask on, he/she is in fact NOT asking you why your gun is unplugged or why your mask is off. So don't begin explaining why in lieu of simply performing the desired task (as a field owner, this drives me nutz). Just $#@%ing hop to!! If you feel that you need to explain your behavior, it's best to do so after you are in compliance with safety regulations .
