I felt that this would be an appropriate post in the Newbie section. It's covered elsewhere, but there is ample evidence that the FNG's often don't use the search option, so it bears repeating. The principles of muzzle control in paintball should be as ironclad as they are in the world of firearms.
Feel free to add something if I've forgotten it.

I see it every single day out there. Someone forgets to condom up, and when told to do so, they swing their gun up and around (pointing it at 5 people's faces enroute) and then start looking for the condom. :) Why was keeping it pointed at the ground such an issue?

Some basic rules for this situation:

1.Freeze. Move your finger up and away from the trigger WITHOUT moving the gun.
2.Move the gun downward till it's pointed at the ground (if it isn't already). Keep it there.
3.Begin fitting condom.

note: CONDOM. There is no excuse for a plug. You can easily find a condom for under $10 and it's the most important piece of equipment in the game (except perhaps the goggs). If you play paintball and have purchased a marker of your own, then you can afford the proper safety equipment.

4.If you need to find your condom first, then unscrew the barrel (without turning the gun upward) and set the gun down on the ground.

Muzzle control should be taken very seriously. In all cases, you should drop whatever else you are doing and focus on your marker as if it's a live grenade. And when someone tells you, "HEY! GET A CONDOM ON THAT $#%%##@ THING, NOW!!!", they are in fact asking as politely as they should.

One final thought: When a ref, player, or field owner tells you to get your gun plugged or your mask on, he/she is in fact NOT asking you why your gun is unplugged or why your mask is off. So don't begin explaining why in lieu of simply performing the desired task (as a field owner, this drives me nutz). Just $#@%ing hop to!! If you feel that you need to explain your behavior, it's best to do so after you are in compliance with safety regulations :dodgy: .

Absoballylutely astounding, wot wot?

If you train yourself in gun safety, you'll inherently travel with your gun pointed away from allies at all times. I was trained on real gun safety, being a hunter and all, and I can't STAND having a gun pointed at me. I don't give a flying BOINK if it's not loaded, not gassed, not cocked, and the safety is on! PUT A FRICKIN SOCK ON IT AND KEEP IT AWAY FROM ME! I was trained to treat EVERY fire-arm as if it were loaded. That means NO pointing them at people WHAT SO EVER. There's nothing that sets me off more than when I get to a field and some walk on and provoking another walk on by poking their barrel in their face. I just wanna walk over and beat the kid with his own gun!

A good way to keep yourself from "accidentally pulling the trigger" is keeping your pointer finger either on your grip with the rest of your fingers, or keep your index finger across the trigger guard, not inside of it. This is also a good idea because then you can flip the safety really quick and -then- put your finger in the trigger guard to shoot.

HOAH! My boy, someone needed to say it, and you said it quite well...

Now for my 2 cents...

I'd like to bring up another issue concering the use of barrel covers.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!
During a game of paintball PLEASE look at what you shoot, you should look for certain things on a possible enemy players before shooting:

1. Look at their marker.
This is the MOST important thing to do before taking a shot, if they have a barrel cover on, DON'T SHOOT THEM! Their out already, no need to shoot a inactive player.

2. Look at BOTH of their arms.
If for any reason, you cannot see their marker, look and see if their holding EITHER arm up in the air. If the player is pointing to the sky HE'S OUT don't shoot. The hand up in the air will NOT necessarily be the MARKER HAND. Anyone who has played on a large field, knows that it's REALLY tireing to hold your marker up until you can return to the regeneration area.

3. Look at BOTH of their arms AGAIN.
Why? If you have a REALLY bad view of your target and can't tell if either of the first 2 rules apply, you STILL need to look before you shoot. You HAVE to clearify if the target is on your team or not. Look at his arm band, what color is it? Is it the same color as yours? Then don't shoot him!

4. You should also look at the target's walk. I'm DEAD serious.
Observe, is he walking like he's taking a stroll down mainstreet? Is he walking without stopping behind trees and such? Is he looking around any? If your target isn't acting like he's afraid of getting shot, chances are, he's already been shot. He doesn't need to stop behind cover to check for bad guys, because he HAS to walk back to the regeneration area first, if he's NOT stopping behind bunkers he's NOT afraid of getting hit, because he IS hit. He dosen't need to walk really slow, if he's NOT being cautious, looking around while stopped, running from cover to cover, he probably is hit. Don't shoot him.

Just remember the A,B,C's.

If you can't tell:
A. If he has a barrel cover on
B. If he has ANY hand in the air
C. If he's on your team or not

DON'T LIGHT HIM UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please DON'T shoot dead players, it's not polite......................

It's also hazardous to your health...................

God Bless,
Doc

^~ I know, that's how I roll.

One thing I seem to get shot for alot is pulling my arm OVER my head as if I'm trying to itch my back. I do this alot because with a bulky A-5A2, it's hard to throw my arm -and- gun in the air, and when I throw my hand in the air, it looks like I'm waving. (I've been known to wave at people before shooting them.)

So keep an eye out for people like me. I'll put my left arm over my head and walk with my face down at the ground. This doesn't mean I've got an itch I can't reach, and this doesn't mean "Ow, I'm getting sunburnt." It means don't shoot me!

If you ever want to prove a point to them, fit a laser at the end of their barrel and any time you see it touch somone mark it down. After a bit show them how many eyes could have possibly been lost. Of course they'd still have their barrel sock on beforehand because you've already told them so, but to further punctuate the point do the laser thing.

I like teh finger or hand in/over the barrel method myself. Or if all else fails out comes the swab, into the end of the barrel until I can find a suitable replacement condom (preferably not a used condom) Wait... that didn't come out right.
Anyways, Be very careful with electronic markers. You can set those off without even knowing it.

In 1970 the Chevy Nova was created. This was the worst selling car in Mexico because the words "No va" mean "Doesn't go". If you would never buy a Saturn Ion because the word "Ion" means "Doesn't shoot", Put this in your profile.

I'm all for safety and stuff but I would never unscrew my barrel and just leave it an my gun on the ground to go get a condom. Just put your hand over it and go get one.

And if they don't stop, take away their Barrel and Air. That will prevent anyone from getting shot. :P
