I normally carry a towel to keep splatter off my goggles. It also comes in handy to help get gogged players off the field safely.

Probably for cleaning off hits. Sometimes there will be a trade off that was obviously one player before the other so a ref might clean off the un-eliminated player. They also use the towels to clean themselves off or clean off other players in between games...

If you've got good ref's, they'll also have a barrel squeegee and at LEAST 5 barrel plugs in their pockets...plugs get shot into lakes more than you think..

I carry a towel, actually two, to act as a sheild. They are easier to carry than the "riot sheilds", and they have the added advantage of being cover in hot or rainy days. They won't stop a paintball from hitting you, but they cushion and slow down the paintball enough that it makes getting hit by about five in a row, bearable. Remember, as a ref, there is no adrenaline running through ones system, so getting hit by a paintball can actually......hurt :o .

I use it to clean hits off of myself. I also wipe splatter off of the players.
