Well a couple things i learned the hardway is know where everyone is at and where they're going. You dont want to be watching the people in front of you and be in the way of the guy movin up the tape.

Let people know where your at. You may be wearing yellow or somthing like that but when you come up over a hill or somthing like that people will shoot unless or tell them your a ref before you start movin or you raise your hand.

Adding on to what he said, sometimes even when you're wearing orange, youre going to get lit the f up. I got shot 6 times in the leg last week, because he could only see my legs through the bunker bottom. And of course I wasn't wearing orange pants.

The thing that distinguishes a good ref to me, at least, something that I like to see, is a ref who moves. Who runs, slides into bunkers, and does every paintcheck on the field before the other refs have a chance.

I keep my hand in the air with my radio.

Def. It'd also save some arguemnts later if you are slow on a call and somone plays on or somthing like that. Whereas if your quick about it there wont be as many arguements.

Really? Just get you're head in the game. Remember, The ref should be THE most aggressive player in the game
If there is a bunker going down and you're too scared, you probably won't be able to call it the way it should go.
If you are agressive in you're reffing, you're boss/superior WILL notice, everyone likes a ref thats there when he's needed, but out of the way the player needs to shoot or move.

I'm gonna pin this because ref is the most important position there is and this will definetly help the game for the people who listen.

Being properly prepared: Bring things like a radio, spare air tanks/markers for the renting players, water, swabs, (maaaaybeee, depending on the field, etc-) a first aid kit.
And yes, be aggressive. Once, playing at my local field, I ran out of air. I call the ref. On the third time, he actually notices me (he was busy talking to the only other ref at the end of the field) and SLOWLY walks to me, and gives me the tank. I had to trade him my tank as insurance. Later, on my way to leave, I ask him where the tank was. He looks around, says to check the back of the truck. After a few minutes of searching, I find it on the floor of the passenger's side seat in their pick-up. Anyways, the moral of the story: don't loose players' gear!
Lets see, oh, here's another tip. When a player is hit (and calls himself out), run over to his bunker to let his opponents know he's out, and to not shoot him when he pops up. Alot of players will really appreciate this, especially if they're new, or under really heavy fire.
Here's another. When ever you see a player playing with honor, compliment him on it. Ex: a player gets shot in the finger/ boot/ etc. and calls himself out without hesitation. Comment as he walks by: "Waita play with honor", or something along those lines. This will contribute to continued sportsmanship throughout the day. Even when games get nasty, the player will not be as tempted to cheat.

Worst case scenario:
A smaller kid (maybe 12) made his way up to the 50, and it is obvious he is scared. He is barely snapping, and a guy is running to get him on his blind side. His hopper is just hit, but the guy is still running. What do you do?
Get your DUMPER in there. The kid will never play again if he gets railed all alone in the fifty. Get in gear, scream it out, or try your best to get in front of him and the other player. Nobody is at fault, but you are trying to make everyone's day great. The kid will be thankful, the player won't care (he still won) and worst case? You got shot point-blank.
And?
If you're a ref you've been shot point blank probably over a hundred times. Most refs are used to it. If you arn't, just think about that kid. You already know bunkers happen, that kid isn't ready yet.
What would happen if you didn't get in there? Maybe nothing, maybe the player would have called him out and not shot, or maybe he would have completely lit him up.
Moral? Tough it out. It's worth it.

Amen to that, I got told, "THAT'S THE WAY IT'S DONE DR. WIGGY!!!!!!!" by someone whom I've NEVER seen his face before in my life, he was a ref, and his comment about my play made my day!!!!!!! :D :(

A big thank you to all refs out there!!!!!!!

God Bless the Ref nation!!!!!!!!!

Preparation is huge. All the stuff you need on you at all times. No matter how annoying it is.Also a tinted lense is my preferance because some players try ot be sneaky and watch your eyes.Another huge thing is the direction your head is pointed in can give away a players location as well.A lot of people try to use refs to there advantage. One other tactic players try to use is shoot randomly into an area where they think a player is then tell you to go check them for paint. If the shots didn't come close don't bother going in they are just trying to get you to point them out.

I would really like to learn some basic reffing skills because as of right now, my only option for play is outlaw ball with family and friends, and I would like for us all to play safely and fairly, that way if we get to go to a real field, we will all know basic rules, sportsmanship, ect...., so I was wanting to learn how to ref our outlaw games to keep things decent. Needless to say I won't ref every game because I would like to play also, but I do want us to be good paintball players.

u must always have the proper equpment

the field i ref at has a list which includes,

ur uniform
a radio
a squegee
a mask
a wistle
a stopwatch (to time games)
and theres some other stuff but thats wat u really need

some other things u may want to bring,
an extra barrel cover/barrel plug
water (for yourself)

that about covers euipment

to be a good ref u must be kind, patient, and friendly

its important to be kind to everyone u meet
the only time u shouldnt is if they r in danger of causing harm to u or others
(more on that later)

when u speak remember to PROJECT your voice and b very loud and clear

when u ref make sure u kno EVERYTHING about the field
that way it is easier for the players and they may like u better
include info such as name, game type, field shape, hazards, and time limit when introducing the field
Example: "This is Rock Garden! Its is basically a large square! At that corner of the square is 1 flag station! The other flag station is located at that croner over there! The is a CTF (Capture the Flag) game! 15 min!"

u should learn radio chatter
the way my field does it is like this

"Channel 7 to base"
"this is base channel 7, go ahead"
"We need a Co2 tank at Bunker Hill"
"Roger channel 7, we'll get it there as soon as we can"

thats jus an example and im not sure how ur field does it, but make sure u kno basic terms such as "Roger"

when reffing say stuff like "Players' out! Let em out!" or "Players' clean!"

when u ref u should make sure to treat every1 equally
even if some guy who is playing is being a PEE SHOOTER, that doesnt mean u shouldnt say hes out when hes gettin lit up.

now, when it comes to wipers, u need to b very stern
if u catch them in the act (b sure u r positive) walk up to them and say somthing like
"hey, buddy. i saw that. go to the dead zone (or w/e) and if i catch u do that again, ur gona sit the next games out.

I dont think u can really do that, lol, but u might b able to
check with ur boss
it is very possible, that u could, because they r doin somthing that could get some1 hurt

if ppl complain that others r shooting "high" then radio on and call for a chrongraph
if u catch some1 shooting way high (320 or higher) then give them a waring and lower their lvl
(i say 320 because most field maximums r usually 280 or 290)

some other tips r
-dont get distracted by talking to other refs or ppl
-try to stay in the open where everyone can c u, but dont get in the way
-keep reminding ppl to "keep their barrel covers/plugs in/on" and keep their "helmets on"

i will add more tips later

i know my younger cousin enjoyed that when the guy running at him was going full auto( was at a friends house) and one of the refs ( the other guys dad) stepped in and called my cuz out before he get drilled with 20 more balls

Wear bright clothing, go to any place that sells hunting apperal and get all the orange gear you can get, that way you know you are covered...hopefully
