You know, in the Blackcell III video, Moati (I belive that is his handle) used a circular sled (painted black) for a shield. Super light+inexpensive=awesome shield.

Yeah he had an aluminum sled though and that won't break easily at all.. You figure if it was going to, it would since the winter, things tend to break easier due to be at a colder temperature. So that was pretty cool. Not to mention how he was more or less dressed like a Barbarian or atleast thats the image I got from it.

His shield worked pretty well too, it was an ingenius idea to use.

As for a "speedball" type-ish field, well a shield is nice, when trying to do a paintcheck, thats for darn sure.

problem with using a shield when you go to do a paintcheck.. your not sapose to touch the player.. and you have to check the prson everywhere in speedball especially in the snake so a shield dosent help much.

Wait, you aren't? I was always under the impression that as long as you do not move any part of their body or equipment from behind the cover that they were using, it was okay. I see refs touch players, and not just to remove armbands, in NPPL, PSP, and NXL...

mostly they do if there in standups... but if your in the snake your not sapose to touch the player... any time a ref touches a player the team can argue if he gets hit that the ref bumped him into a shot.

If a player does a superman into the snake, and the ref believes that he or she sees a paintball hit the player on the front of their jersey, they have every right to ascertain if indeed the player did actually get hit or not. I am curious as to where you get this rule of yours about not touching the players.

Not touching the players is just common courtesy that way it doesn't affect the players movement, or pulling gear into oncoming fire.. However, there are definately situations where the player may need a bit of manipulation of their body to do a thorough paint check.

As far as someone supermanning it into the snake and refusing to allow you to see, eh, then it can get a shady and as for touching them... hard to say. But yes, if you do touch a player for a paint check, more them as little as possible and so forth. Just common sense there.

As for a team arguing the ref bumped a player into the shot, well he'd have to move quite a bit to actually cause the player to go into a shot....

i reffed some tournys up here alot of x-ball practice and might be reffing nyxl this season. i was told by chris "duce" hanse to not touch a player when cheking him if you need to check his jersey in the front on the superman dive get right in the knuckle and look up.. like put yourself inbetween the player and the knuckle to check for a few seconds then pull yourself out and eclare him clean.

No offense to either of you two, but as a ref, I have a right to inspect every part of a player, and if I am unable to inspect it visually without moving anything, then I will move what I need to see the area that I need to check. As long as I am not moving said player, their equipment, or their clothing into the line of fire or another player (Does not matter if the player is on the opposing team or not), then everything is okay. Thre are more than enough instances of players getting upset at a ref for lifting up a shirt to look at an area where a hit is thought to be, only because the hit is there, the player knows it, and the only way to see it would be to lift a shirt. Of course, this is where the sheild can come into play, as the ref can be protected while checking the player.

Personal opinion, if a player can cheat, hiding a hit and you can't touch them in doing your job to look for the hit, then the player is going to exploit that. Again, that is simply my personal opinion.

what i was basically saying is if you cant take the shots while checking someone someone without a shield maybe you should just be a time judge. the only time i ever need a shield is when im reffing in the walls at castle.with people coming around every 8 foot divided corner shooting anything that moves you could use it. but in speedball i dont see the need.... just carry a towel with you and that a hint enough that your a ref.

So when you play in an NPPL format you just use 7 balls with a Phantom while playing with shorts and a mask correct? I mean thats the amount of players that are playing on the other team and thats all you need and thats all you 'need'. If you cant take a couple hits then you dont need to be playing right?
