Your mother.... Jk... There was recently an article in APG about polycarbonate shields. They are hard and see through.

Theres a ref at my field who uses this busted up golf umbrella. Also, theres a few kids who use netting stretched over a PVC pipe frame, seems to work pretty well. Also, unlike the JT shields, they dont need to be washed off.

I've never used one whenever I've reffed...I'll usually be wearing a cup, especially since I don't have to lay down, so my arms don't need to protect anything. I just throw up right right arm and scream. "REF COMING THROUGH!" That, combined with flourescent orange, and you're set. They shouldn't have any reason to shoot you unless the ball is in mid-flight. That's why you yell "Ref coming through" -before- you go through...

You know those disk sleds? We took those, punched 2 holes in each of the two handles, then took some heavy wire and made some handles.

I second that!

I got mine for a dollar at the local thrift store(bright orange). Works pretty well for making the ref seen and also doubles as a shield.

At our woods ball field, I simply yell "Ref coming through" unless it is really thick with players. At the airball field, where I work most of the time, I carry a pair of towels. The players like me because I have little hesitation to go and check people for hits.

Shooting like there is no tomorrow. For all we know, there is no tomorrow.

No joke but at my local field we carry trash can lids. Some places I don't even use a shield.

Or you could spend $15 at Wally World and have TWO shields customized to your liking!

I'm against shields...you're a ref learn to take a hit and deal with it lol. Its hard enough to chase after the fire fights without tugging a huge shield through the brush/woods/structure/whatever!

Take it eh? Try reffin speed with a bunch of jumpy 12yr olds. Its like what I was discussing with a dude who's been ballin for awhile, n00bs are the worst. You see pro's and more experienced players recognize whats what and although they generally shoot faster, your less likely to get hit. Shoot, our front/pointman ran in on a paint check on a kid, who had the other kid posted up, and turned around and looked at him for awhile and then shot him. Its like he was on motion sensors! Its also easier to go without a shield in the woods, theres more stuff in the way.

I also obviously have different type of shields. Playing sports helps too, i guess it helps me carry around a 0.25lb piece of plastic. <_<

Yeah those 1/4 Pound Pieces of plastic, let me tell you.... carrying such weight never felt so good, haha.

Sometimes I use a shield, other times no.. I found a piece of metal, I think it was 16 guage 1.5 ft wide by 3ft long.. it was heavy but a nice shield none the less. I would love a plexi glass shield, or just a small saucer like deal... oh well.

The reason I don't normally use a shield is because well when playing in the woods, it tends to hinder ability to move on the fly, because of the terrain and so forth. As for a "speedball" type-ish field, well a shield is nice, when trying to do a paintcheck, thats for darn sure.

Then, its just a trash can lid, or equilivant too.
