Day 282

Ring around the rosie
A pocket full of posies
Ashes, Ashes
We all fall down

I remember repeating and saying that poem as a child, while playing different childhood games .... and then hearing for the first time the definition of it. It seemed very macabre at the time that anyone would teach that to small children to be used during such innocent acts like playing.

A quick summary of it for those who might have never heard it...

Ring around the rosie...the bright red ring around a scaly patch on your skin that was usually one of the initial signs of the black death
A pocket full of posies... something thought to ward off getting the plague
Ashes, ashes... the bodies were so numerous and thought to be carriers of the disease that they would pile them up and have mass cremations
We all fall down... we're all gonna die ... the disease is indiscriminate and strikes any and all, young, old, rich, poor

So now we come to another hypothetical question ...

Dec 21st is upon us, you have survived the initial catastrophies with only minor injury. But there are many, maybe tens, or hundreds, or maybe thousands that will die if not helped soon. You are prepared, you have your bug out plan, your supplies, all you need to go right now. The next wave of disasters are all but upon us.

Do you

1 ) continue with your plan of escape while your exit strategy is still pretty much in place
2 ) go back and help all that you can, and hope to survive the next set of disasters
3 ) go back only for friends and bring them with you
4 ) go back only for family and bring them with you
5 ) go back for both family and friends and bring them with you
6 ) do nothing

if you choose 2,3,4, or 5, how much does that alter your plan, both time and supply wise, at what point would you finally call off finding everyone and try to still make it out, or would you have to account for everyone before you would consider going ?

#5, sort of.

In event of disaster, I am looking out for one person besides blood. There are other allies I would consider along the way (you know who you are, if you are one of them), but I'm not stopping to look for you.

As far as blood goes, they have guns and ammo too. Odds are we're probably bugging out to the same place.

In answer to your "when do you call it off", I say it depends on who. Family probably not at all, as they are bugging out to the same spot or similarly so. Only if they are caught in a really bad area and need help getting out of the initial town.

You write that as though linking up and building supplies for some others isn't already part of the plan.

If something were to go down, my mother and little sister are my first priority. Most of the rest of my crew can handle themselves, but I am putting myself between them and anything going down. Primarily to protect them, but also to safeguard supplies.

My father and step-mother own guns and know how to use them, as does my step-sister's boyfriend. My grandparents, uncles, and cousins also. They have all hunted and I trust they all would be able to defend themselves until we can get together. All have not only weapons and ammo, but at least a decent supply of food, skills, and manpower to add to the group. Part of being from generations of farmers, we've all learned how to be squared away for bad times.

However, my mother and sister lack the necessary force of will to properly defend themselves. My mom sees OC spray as an end-all, be-all, and while my sister spent 4 years in ROTC, and is a proficient marksman, she is opposed to using firearms and has breakdowns from fairly minor stressors. I doubt either is willing to use lethal force to defend their lives or property, they would rather turn over everything and hope they are left alone. Thus, if they are to be safe, they will need protection. I trust no one else to do the task, least of all them.

Day 281

The Ides Of March Are Upon Us

Yesterday there were almost 300 weather records broken across the nation in one day for high temperature alone. The weather patterns are already drastically signalling that changes are coming.

Yep. Yesterday was mid 70's, sunny. Today? 54 and rainy. The day before Yesterday was 50's, but sunny.
It's crazy. It was supposed to be sunny until Saturday here.

I dragged out all the old fans yesterday. My sister decided the hottest day of the year so far was the perfect time for cooking and baking. The house was oppressive. I had to drink my beer in my boxers on the front porch.

Is this some new fangled filtration system you speak of, or perhaps a new type of refridgeration ? lol

Speaking to an earlier post, everyone else i have is far away, so the only peep i would have to make sure gets out with me is my old, blind, deaf, fat, schnauzzer... and i would throw him in a back pack and tote him if i had to, cause he's coming with me whether he likes it or not !! lol

EDIT .. i almost forgot, one of his other endearing qualities, i think he has dimensia.

That is one test I am happy not to have been subjected to. It's awkward enough to break out the flesh weasel at my annual work physical and I haven't even gotten the lady drunk.
