HOWEVER, the UMP is ridiculous. If a single burst can kill me across the map, then so should a burst from an LMG. I'd reduce the UMP's rate of fire and long-range accuracy. (Speaking of which--there's bullet drop! Not much, but enough to make you take it into account.)
Lights and Lasers. NO. Just no. Lasers should not blind you when aimed at your chest. Tactical lights don't completely destroy your vision when there's tons of lighting around you already. Fix 'em or get rid of them. We know the Frostbite 2 engine is awesome and can do some pretty remarkable things, but don't shove things in just because you can. Make them work first.

I.E. in BF2 I used to have to empty a clip of my Sniper's silenced pistol into the back of some dude's head just to kill him, and reload to shoot the next one.
I certainly like sniper scopes glinting as they do...
And I like that vehicles aren't immediately unstoppable beasts.
Thumbs down at no wire-guided AT missles though.

Yeah, it's a fine line between "do something" and more effective than what should be more effective weapons. Handguns are should be last-ditch defensive weapons. Something's wrong if they're accurate and powerful enough to use as a primary.
The optics are very nice, in every area.
In the Bad Company series vehicles were useless if the opfor had a good chopper pilot. The Bradley's gun couldn't elevate high enough and the AAA BMP's gun was too slow to traverse, couldn't fire fast enough and the vehicle itself didn't have enough armor. In the beta I'm playing, we haven't seen any vehicles. It's just the Operation Metro map.

Anti-tank can get an Anti-Air rocket launcher, but they give up the capability to harm ground vehicles (though I forgot to try my AT mines I earned, I probably get to keep those on).
Even the AA has to earn its anti-air missiles (2nd unlock). And anti-air tanks can HURT real tanks. Even kill! (I rode up and disabled a distracted tank from the side then drove circles around it shooting my AA guns...lol. I have a button on my mouse to turn up sensitivity at will, makes it easier to turn the big vehicle guns
And now if you manage just to "disable" air vehicles sometimes you hit them so they can't fly at all and just come crashing down...all they can do is bail or die.
Much nicer than BF2 - choppers and jets were king. The SAM sites were crap on good jet pilots, and you showed up on radar as soon as you got in one.

Also, this guy's advice is really useful for jet combat:

Maybe. For me the biggest issue is not being able to play with all your friends on the same team on the Bawx. This only happens if I have more than one person in my party. When I try to play BF3 with my two best buds, it puts two of us on one team and the third guy gets placed on the other. Really frustrating.

Yeah, jets are pretty much relegated to air combat unless you've unlocked the rocket pods.
