So actually, I think I might pick this one up.

Edit: this one was pretty tempting too... Still is, actually.. Will probably talk to my local shop and see what they can get their pricing for.

Sabre makes some legit rifles. Still Rock River is known to be THE people to beat in the reliability department. They design their rifles to take some brutal crap.

I still want one of their LAR-8 rifles. The Predator HP is FRAGing purdy.

Really? I always thought Sabre was built a little better than Rock River?

One of my favorite places to shop. Shipping is $7.95 for your complete order no matter what it is. Just pay transfer and background for complete firearms and lowers.

I thought about it but thats something I have to look in to more. I want to shoot it before I make a decision. I may want something to help muzzle flip or hide the flash or both so we'll see.

And with that info in mind, watch this:

You might not need Knight Armament's $440 comp/flash-hider.

Truth

Rock River is commercial grade while Sabre is Military grade. My bud has essentially the same rifle I do but with a fluted 18" Saber barrel. Awesome accuracy, lighter weight, and great finish. Have to admit, I am a little jealous.

"I thought about it but thats something I have to look in to more. I want to shoot it before I make a decision. I may want something to help muzzle flip or hide the flash or both so we'll see."

Unless shooting in absolute darkness there is little flash to be concerned about. Modern powders have taken care of this. As for muzzle flip, that is more of a full auto issue and after seeing a ton of competition carbines it seems there is just too much in terms of trends for most AR parts. I've seen a couple compensators that reduce a bit of muzzle rise but are hell on anyone or anything next to the shooter. When we are set up for calling dogs we tend to use one ear plug and one sound reducer. Compensators are the suck for any application where sound for the shooter or shooting partner is an issue. Basic A1 and A2 flash hiders do the job for all but a few shooters. Check out YHM for affordable hiders and compensators.

I could have sworn the majority of Rock Rivers were Mil-spec, and durable as FRAG to boot, hence the big DEA/FBI contract they got.

Excerpt of the press release.

Quote

DEA Awards 5 Year Contract to Rock River Arms.

(Colona, IL)…Rock River Arms has the reputation for producing top quality AR15s and custom 1911s. What sets Rock River Arms apart from the competition is their versatility to produce weapons to such rigorous specifications.

Many elite AR15 manufacturers submitted weapons for approval but fell short during the abuse test, which was the initial phase of testing. Rock River Arms AR15 .223/5.56 NATO met the requirements and specifications set forth by DEA. The abuse test consisted of the parts interchange test, the extreme temperature test, the drop test, the throw test and the corrosion test. In the parts interchange test, the carbines were field stripped. The major component parts were randomly interchanged and reassembled. Each carbine was then loaded and fired and had to perform without malfunction. During the extreme temperature test, the carbines were placed in a chamber and stabilized at a temperature of minus 20 degrees F for one hour. Then the weapons were removed and immediately fired at room temperature. Then the carbines were placed in a temperature chamber where it was stabilized at 120 degrees F for one hour then removed and immediately fired at room temperature. The weapon then moved on to the drop test from a height of 4 feet and dropped onto a concrete floor six different times on all sides of the carbine. After completing the drop safety test, the weapon was loaded and had to safely fire 20 rounds with no malfunction to pass. The throw test consisted of throwing the firearm from a height of four feet and over a distance of 15 feet, once on the right side and once on the left side, then must safely fire 20 rounds with no malfunction. It was then submerged in salt water and exposed to sand. After both tests the weapon had to function flawlessly.

Rock River Arms was one of the selected few that outperformed the other manufacturers and moved on to phase two of the testing. Phase two was the 5,000 round endurance/functional reliability test. The testing team consisted of members of the DEA and FBI Firearms Training Unit and the DEA and FBI armorers/gunsmiths. The team also tested for accuracy, dispersion and velocity.

Rock River Arms is supplying the DEA with their AR15 chambered in .223/5.56 NATO, equipped with an Eo Tech holo sight, a Surefire rail and white light, a Viking sling and an Eagle Industry carry case. The DEA awarded Rock River Arms the contract, followed by a substantial purchase order. The initial order will be delivered this month.

For more information, contact: Rock River Arms, 1042 Cleveland Rd, Colona, IL 61241 phone: 309-792-5780 Fax: 309-792-5781

I don't know about yall, but that is competing with my AK for amount of crap that it can handle.

Also, as for the mil-spec thing, there are a few differences. Mil-spec are made to handle full auto, which is irrelevant to the civilian shooter, as even the fastest trigger finger can't approach that. Second, there are many components, like Fail-Zero bolt groups and uppers, that far exceed standard mil-spec components in terms of durability and quality, so I couldn't knock the commercial grade gear. There is some solid stuff in the civvie market.
