I know using a barrel kit lets you get good paint-to-barrel match which increases your accuracy, but does it affect how effective the Apex will be?

I wouldn't expect the Apex to get any significant improvements from being on a barrel kit.
You'll have better shots when the apex is turned "off" though.

He's right.
I have a 12" Lapco Apex ready barrel with a .687 bore. It works pretty well with just about everything, and the barrel does shoot tighter groupings with the Apex off.

in another discussion about what barrel to get, someone suggested the RAP4 Recon with the APEX. supposedly the straight groves line the ball up better for the APEX ramp....i have not bought one to check this out. if you do (or anyone has some experience with that combination), let us know.
EDIT:
I do find the APEX really works well to improve a Crappy (stock) barrels but I do not use it that often when when use after-marked barrels as much.
