There's alot we as people can do. But nobody does.
Lots of people do. Frankly though we're not technologically advanced enough to be able to counter fate. I don't mean fate like some cosmic force that decided some people have to be poor -- I mean circumstance. Take the story of Tarzan. Right now, we possess no force capable of taking Tarzan out of the jungle and making him a normal human being.... that's an almost-sorta-parallel for an awful lot of today's poor. Some poor kid gets born to a poor family in a poor ghetto, he grows up a certain way and we don't have the power to transform him or her into something else. Thankfully and somewhat miraculously, there are third-generation white-trash, redneck, and gang-banger kids who decide "enough of this crap" and make something of themselves -- those people are ten times more awesome than I am, and lemme tell ya, I'm pretty awesome. But what that takes, is personal motivation.
That doesn't solve everything for everybody, by any stretch of the imagination. Like I said, we can't fight fate and fate is a bastard. There are lotsa poor people who are poor for lotsa reasons. Successful people aren't the problem, though -- they're the solution, or rather, the product of the solution. We WANT success, for everybody. But you can't get success for everybody, without getting success for some people first. Yet. Maybe someday we'll be able to change that, I've got an open mind.... but for now, that's how the world works. So, go get yours, and encourage those around you to go get theirs, with caring and positive influence. Give back when you can. Don't, when you can't. THAT is how you'll make the world a better place.
