The big red's have been the standard at each field I've played at. Never seen any issues w/ them, as far as I know they are like tanks. They definitely cost a hunk of change brand new, but they can be found used on various forums & sometimes eBay for under $200.

I did a search on pbreview.com - got nothing on the big red's, but there were other reviews done: LINK. Try a Google search for "big red chronograph" & you'll likely turn up a number of results - pricing & maybe some reviews.

If you want a quality benchtop model for a chrono range, then I'd say the big red is top dog. There were reviews for some handhelds but they aren't typically as well built or accurate as a benchtop. They are, however, good for a ref to have in the field for spot checking markers that might be shooting hot, but they shouldn't be used as a replacement for a quality benchtop.

The only thing to remember about the big red ones, is that they have to be at least 10 feet apart...otherwise the choronos can actually "talk" to eachother giving you false readings...we would be shooting over one chrono hot and all three would go off, or people would get crazy ratings because of the communication...also for some reason tall grass can mess them up, so they need to be up at least as high as a picnic table for the most part to work the best.

I am pretty sure they stopped making the red one. It is worth the money however.
Coming soon.

There is also some newer additions to the benchtop chronos.

The Custom Chronograph Inc. X-Field Radar. Smaller, lighter, uses a more common 9v battery, and just as easy to use as the big red boxes. Usually around $200.

Features Include:
Measures both velocity and rate of fire!
Loud limit programmable alarm beeper
Programmable 200 to 350 fps
Easy to use - turn it on, place barrel on rubber rest and pull the trigger!
Velocity: 150 to 400 fps (feet per second)
Rate of fire: 4 to 25 bps (balls per second)
Quick change splat shield
Auto power down
Auto reading - every shot
Accurate and reliable
Long battery life
Sturdy metal base construction
6 x 8 x 9 inches
Paintballs only - no pellets, no airsoft, no bullets

There is also a hand held version called the X-Radar. Usually the hand held cost about $80

Sport Sensor makes the small odd shaped RADARchron units most players see refs carry around...but they also make a great unit that is both a benchtop and portable using the same system. A couple of options to choose from with a small stand or a folding stand they offer the greatest flexability in the market for small fields.
The manufacturer has far better info than I want to type...so check out their site...Sports Sensor Inc..
Typically cost around $150 for stand and radar unit.

Other than that you are looking at units that utilize the rabbit ears and sit on tables...I really do not like these units though since they are so easy to fool either on purpose by jerks or on accident by new players.

But I guess with any Chrono you should have a knowledgable ref watching so the players do not get improper readings. Keeping the barrel level with the surface the chrono is mounted to and resting the barrel on the rubber seat are critical to getting accurate readings...if those two key situations are not met the reading on the chrono is not accurate and you risk players getting shot with speeds greater than the field opperator wants.

Hope this helps out.

The "big blue" one Krazy showed is what has technically replaced the original red version.

Biggest thing to remember when you get a chrony is keep a fresh battery in it. As the battery wears down it will give out wonky and wrong readings. Fresh batteries always fix that. I used the yellow radarchron for years, great small handheld chrony, but as the batteries went the readings went with it.

I got the update to the radarchron, its bigger and yellow still, runs off AA's and can give more then just velocity; average velocity of the string, high and low for the string, bps, average bps, high and low bps...great fun to screw around with. Just remember fresh batteries will always be good. If you haven't changed them in a year, do it.

I have used the X- Field Radar. It is the option a local field went with.

Personally I like it far better than the red box. Red boxes are big, bulky and use a bloody huge battery!

I have also used the Sport Sensor ROF both as a player and a ref in the SPPL. The ability to grab the sensor toss it in the belt pouch and hit the field is a very nice thing. And the folding stand is great for storage and transport.

I own a RADARchron....I think it was possibly one of the best purchases I have ever made. The perfect outlaw game tool. Not to mention how many times I have ended up letting owners use it when their red boxes went T.U.

The red boxes are fine, but the cost is simply not worth the performance any longer since less expensive better performing option are available.

We have the little yellow guy also.Your correct in the erratic readings, low battery.Drove me nuts a few minutes trying to figure out why a guys marker was so terribly inconsistant.Do you know if the other chronos do the same thing?

Not really up on the prices. I have seen the X-field Radar all over the place in the $200 range. Using Google of course.

With a litte patience and some searching I am sure you can find them a bit less.

We just had a field close locally...they made it all of about three months. They have one for sale at $150 on my local forums.
