It says at the bottom they don't know what they are going to do, my thought is they should leave it and make a tourist attraction out of it.

They could, but how? It's 300 feet deep. they'd have to spend a ton of cash to shore up the sides and make it safe. Even then.... Another hurricane could still cause more to wash out.

Just put up walls around it and say, "Hey wanna see it? Twenty bucks." And if expands, just build a new wall and raise the price. Maybe you can even sell people five dollar rocks to let tourist throw them down to try to hear it hit the bottom. Then you're making money on the crater being filled. Might take a few hundred years, but that's a government job for ya.

I remember the 2007 sinkhole - it was very similar as far as the "too perfect" smooth sides and what not. So I'm quite confident that it's real.
Scary stuff - might be kinda cool to rappel into... :)

It happens, it is because of the soil composition is mainly volcanic particles which when saturated with water, lose the friction and shear strait down. This particular one probably had water saturation down about half a mile in order to shear that deep and wide.

Ps: I'm half Guatemalan, It is a nice country but the volcanic and earth quake activity is not something to be desired.

(did you know that part of Star Wars was filmed in Guatemala? They filmed in Tikal with the Mayan Temples)

Happens almost every year during heavy rains in Mexico City...it's sitting on top of a giant aquafir...which is pretty much drained. Rows of houses get swallowed up at a time. Happened in San Francisco a few years back...about 60% of San Francisco is built up landfill...when it rains and a drain pipe breaks, the water quickly erodes the landfill and next thing you know, sinkhole. Pretty scary looking up close.

Wow, thats amazing! It's crazy to think the very ground we could be living atop of could be just a shelf of dirt waiting for drop out from underneath us.

Happens mostly in cities and under streets with complicated water systems, but really could happen almost anywhere that a pipe breaks and erodes the surrounding fill...at some point the ground above collapses into the hole below. Seems to happen mostly under city streets, and the victims are usually just parked cars, but if a heavy vehicle rolls over a developing sink hole, kiss it goodbye! Most of those incidents are just a drop of about 15ft, but those sink holes in Mexico and South America look like they go straight through the Earth!

Well, since it's in a Central or South American country, it's more of a "stinkhole". Really puts the descriptive phrase "Butthole of the world" in perspective.

... have you, like, seen Guatemala before? Because honestly, I give it no more than a week before people are trying to live in the sinkhole. I mean, poor taste sure, but it's not a lie at all.
