It's been brought up on this forum several times and for the most part the answer is no. On most fields if a piece of gear you're wearing/carrying gets hit, you're out. And that would include your shield

They were "Gladiators vs Barbarian" and "Trojan War" themed.

Something like 5'X3'X1.5" 50lbs+. It would have to be heavy to make it fair.

I cheaped out and used Acrylic for mine - don't do it. If you want to go realistic, use metal (like a sawed oil drum, maybe?) and plexiglass.
Acrylic works OK for the most part if you want a full see-through...it lasted most of the scenario game, a couple corners go chipped off the top where the force of the blow couldn't be transferred as much as in the center....then I saw two guys coming around a corner from 5 feet away. Took out one, got shot on my armored glove knuckle..but the damage was done.
Literally a hole punched through the bottom right a few inches in...and where it hit my handle area, cracked halfway down the shield.
I recommend pre-drilling any holes you use for a handle/straps (with a piece of junk wood underneath to stabilise), and use thin strips of metal across where you drilled to put the nuts down on. At the very least, washers are a must or stuff WILL crack.
But use PLEXIGLASS.

When life gives you lemons, make orange juice and leave the world wondering how the hell you did it.
I wonder if I could turn one of those "Rascal" scooter thingies into an old-guy paintball tank? -Violator

Knight Owl has created the following.
Shields can be no larger than 36" x 36".
They must have and arm strap and hand strap. Meaning they must be securly carried on one arm.
All corners must be rounded so as not to harm players.
All shields must approved prior to use.
Shield user may not carry a gun...any gun.
Shield uses may carry gernades and demo props.
Any hit to the shield does not eliminate the player...but any hit the player does. All hits to the player count (I personally aim for the feet and elbows).
That is it. I have seen everything from wood to lexan used. Complex curved designs to simple rectangles.
Thye can be ultimatly annoying and extremely usefull to a mission and tend to add a bit to the game play making both the user of the shield and the guy trying to shoot him think a bit more.
