A5 rear velocity ajustment screw Rate Topic: -----

Quick question to all you A5 owners. I have an A5 and would like to know if a rear velocity screw would be a good upgrade. I already have a G36 stock and an expansion chamber with a 32degrees drop forward. With the expansion chamber I shoot a consistent 270-280 fps. I would like to relay like to push my marker to it's fullest. So is this a good upgrade or not? Thanks

It's not a preformance thing. Also how will it work with a stock?

Thanks for the reply. As far as I know it won't work with the stock. It is like the stock back end. But I think I can drill out my G36 stock and tap out the hole and put a screw in it. This should work but I just wanted to know if it was a worthy upgrade. And besides I'm not going to buy a 30$ part thet I can build for less than a dollar.

Bad Idea. Too much work for nothing. Absolutley no gain.

I disagree. 90% of paintball markers out there have some sort of rear adjustment screw. I am confused as to why Tippmann did not include this into there gun. But then again I am comparing a stacked tube to an inline bolt operating system. I read on a lot of people who have spring problems that could be fixed by a spring adjuster. And I do agree that it's not a upgrade, just an improvement.

Welcome to the forums Vortex... glad you found us!

Adding a rear screw can give you better control over the velocity adjustment, only because just choking the air w/ the stock power tube screw isn't very precise. I'm not certain I've ever seen anyone mod a folding stock like that to accept a rear velocity screw. You are dealing w/ 800 psi +/- of air pressure so I don't think it's as simple as drilling a hole as you make it seem. Worth the discussion though, I'll follow up on this later to see any replies you'll likely get.

Here is my opinion-

I did a few tests using an RVA with a JCS Goldmemeber Powertube (it does not come with the side velocity adjustment) and my velocity consistency improved from about a variance of 10-20 FPS to 6-9 FPS. I then added a CP Barrel kit, buy mid to high grade paint and get a consistency of about 3-5 FPS.

There are a ton of variables to shot consistency and it takes a lot of work and recording data to figure it out. As for an A5... well it's hard to find a gun thats worse then that to start with. However I share your desire to hone it in. My suggestion would be to either back off the side velocity screw or get a new power tube with out one and get an RVA. I love em'!

Another thing to think about if your a real paint slinger is ball drop (thats what I call it). If you have a E-Trigger or response trigger, this will play a big part in your shot consistency as well. Basicity it's when your gun can't get the air pressure it needs fast enough to shoot the next ball at the same velocity. This is something I've been working on for a while but I think I found the problem, my remote line.

Anyways, welcome and good luck.

Thanks for the welcome Ger. As for the air, I'm operating on a 20oz tank; and I have a fixed G36 stock from Ops gear. Since the spring and spring pin set in a indentation in the stock,I think I drill and tap the hole for a screw of my own. I do not want to loose my stock over an adjustment screw. I will inform you all if this works or not.

Hey guys. I finished my G36 stock upgrade. I had a little trouble drilling the hole in the stock because there is an aluminum shank that runs through the middle. So keeping the bit centered was a bit of a challenge. I tested it and it didn't explode on the first shot so I think I'm good. With the screw screwed all the way in there is about a hairs gap between the bolt and the screw. My 20oz tank has only air in it (no liquid) so I can't test it's true fps till dad goes and fills our 35lb. Co2 tank we use to charge our smaller tank. Sorry I can't send pics. on it right now but I will try.

That is one nice marker. I see you put thought behind the stock and the adjustment screw placement.

Looks good, my only gripe i will point out is you need to drill another hole from the side for a small set screw so it locks the screw in place. Right now that is illegal to use at any field or tourney, there is no lock. So you essentially have a "dial-a-welt" as they used to be called. You can chrono in right, then just screw the screw in a tad to increase velocity, and if ref comes by, just unscrew a turn. A set screw from the side would lock the bolt/screw from moving and make sure you can't change it on the field. Use a plastic set screw, enough to hold it in place, but not enough to damage threads

Good point. I didn't think of that . I usually don't play on fields ( usually on the 120 acres around my house) so it didn't cross my mind.

Ok guys, I finally got Co2 and cronoed my A5 with the upgrade I did. With a 20oz Co2 tank, 4stage expansion chamber, 10in barrel and the screw screwed all the way in I achieved a top speed of 375fps. With a longer barrel(24in) I estimate around 430 to 450. My brother has an Mr1 with a 24in long barrel and he can reach 420fps. The speed is just for the fun factor.

I can tune it down to 275 for playing. I'm working on putting a set screw on it so I can play on fields with this setup.

the longer barrel should not help with your fps .... it should retard the fps due to increased friction on the ball before it leaves the barrel
