Ok so I was painting one of my friends xbox controllers and I sprayed it black. When I went to see if it had dried I noticed there were a bunch of gray splotches all over it. Does any one know what may have caused this???

Not 100% sure but maybe not prepped correctly? or bad paint? Not downing you or anything, but usually problems with painting result from improper or inadequate prep. In my experience anyway. Got pics of it?

Unfortunately I do not .this is the second or third coat and it seems to be getting worse with each layer.....

Hand oil left over...did you wash the parts? (soap and water)

QFT - It would seem the surface wasn't completely clean when the first layer of paint was laid. You can keep adding more layers but, like you wrote, it won't really get any better. Only way to make it right is to sand it all down & start over w/ a clean surface.

^^^ yup. with any plastic, you have to make sure it is uber clean before moving on to paint. leanred that back as a kid when i built models. plastic is a petroleum product, it is naturally covered in some sort of film left over from creation, soaking in detergent (dish soap, laundry soap) for long periods will eat away that film, and leave you with a nice surface to paint.

now, if your plastic is a more soft, bendable nylon feel to it (like most gravity feed hoppers), you also have to sand that baby down to break the surface up, then soap-soak it again, then you are set for paint.

Thanks for the help. I sanded it off and plan to start again soon.but when I sanded I noticed the gray spots were moist underneath so maybe I also did not wait long enough between coats,as well. Also I did wash and sand it before I painted it but I guess thouroghly enough.

well, you kind of want the paint still tacky between coats...that makes sure layers bond into one another.

it most likely starts underneath the paint, where the plastic is not clean.

Not bad man... some issues w/ the stencils/masking. But considering the size, the details look great.

Nice man! For future reference, when the paint reacts that way, it is because of improper surface prep (i.e. not sanding the smooth surface of the paddle and not completely removing the oils left of the paddle).

When it comes to painting, be fastidious with your prep work. Prep is the foundation of the paint job and if it sucks it will always show up.
