how do you mask off the ports of a ported barrel so you dont get paint on the inside?

Depending on the size/shape of the ports, I have used anything ranging from toothpicks to bamboo skewers, modeling clay or Play-doh, as well as tape. Toothpicks tend to work well for most spiral porting, though.

I just camo all my gun, all I used was 3 cans of spray paint held it away about 6 to 12 inch and did quick sprays this is what I got and NO paint in the barral  Photo_0027.jpg (338.26K)

That's what she said... lol Had to, sorry... Anyhow... Toothpicks are a good idea. I like the cotton ball idea except that fibers might get "glued" to the barrel by the paint... if you could get a gell that doesn't leave a bad residue you could compress it inside the barrel when the porting is so that it stops up the porting, but it would have to be something that would "retreat" and not stick to the porting. I got it! just use a finish brush to paint around the porting by hand... lol

I have heard of using Vaseline or something similar, but clay works well, is easy to remove and clean up, so it fits your idea pretty well, Spektre. Cotton balls are a bit problematic, as you mentioned. The key to any successful paint job is to use light coats so you avoid build-up around ports, joints, screw-holes, or other areas where paint can settle if it's applied too thickly.

yeah, good point. My only concern with clay is that it might break or stick when you went to remove it and then you'd have a piece of clay stuck inside your porting that wouldn't rinse out...

Just roll up a piece of paper into a tube shape & slide it into the barrel.
When it's in, adjust it to fit tightly against the barrel's inner walls.
Paint away.

take a sheet or two of paper towels and roll them up and stuff em down the barrel. I've done this multiple times and never had any problems with it. also dont forget to tape up the threads of the barrel.

Two ways I spray ported barrels.

FOAM hair curl rollers (you can find at Wal-Mart, Grocery stores, $1 Dollar stores etc and health and beauty sections).
use a wood dowel and stuff the foam rollers in until it fills the length of the barrel. Make sure one of the foam rollers
are just to the tip off the barrel end. TAPE OFF THE breach/threaded end completely!!! NICE & CLEAN paint job every time.

Another way is a wood dowel with paper towels tightly wrapped around it. Tape down the end of the paper towels.
push the dowel through the barrel until the paper towel is covering the inside of barrel completely.

If you apply the paint in thin coats, there will be no concerns about clogging up any of the port holes.

I usually just roll up a paper towel and shove it down there. Works fine but just about all these methods work well.

I heard from a kid before that you can get a long balloon, slide it into the barrel and then blow it up. I heard that works. I'm not sure myself though

all the above ideas work. my way is to cross my arms and WILL THE PAINT onto the barrel with mind powers.

clean up is much easier that way.
