I was thinking of her as well. Her rise to power shrouded in mystery (was she behind the death of her incompetent husband? nice story line). I know the term enlightened despots but I'm not sure I would prefer to call her enlightened. I guess that in itself is an essay topic. Ha.

Well. She was enlightened, but the serfs screwed themselves over when they revolted. Her relationships with Voltaire and Diderot show that she was open to the most liberal ideas of the time. She just never implemented anything for the serfs because she most likely felt betrayed by the uprising.

Whatever era of Russia you do- don't neglect the slave labor that was used to build most of Russian European-inspired cities. Tens of thousands died building St. Petersburg alone, and many estimates run into the hundreds of thousands of people who died building the empire. Perhaps if the Tsars had been a little less brutal on their own population, the commies would have never gotten a foothold in Russia. Rasputin is always an interesting figure in Russian history and mythology/legend, as well.

The Cossack revolt is pretty interesting. Or you could do the creation of St. Petersburg or Peter the great himself. Ivan the terrible (one of them) also had some interesting stories. I think he killed his own son in a dual for the crown.

Both Ivan and Peter the Great killed of their sons. Ivan beat his son where as Peter had his son tortured to death for different views. Ah Russia. I ended it up finishing er on the line. Went with Peter the Great but I am not sure I am going to stick with it. Would rather do something under the radar.

I did a paper for college called "Rise of Lenin in the Motherland" thats a good topic. It was a paper about Lenin growing up.
A few others Napoleon's invasion of Russia where Czars burned Moscow to the ground in the Dead of Russian Winter. Also the last foreign army to set foot in Moscow.
You could talk about the Russian Empire and how it was built, could also plug in of how this is also the current state of Russia.
I can't remember the dates but Trans Siberian Railway?
Her cities have a history of its own as well. St. Petersburg, Moscow, Vladavostik (SP?)
You probably talk for hours and theorize about Russia's with draw from WWI eastern Front.
