Less lethals are law enforcment and riot control.
Bean Bag rounds, Rubber rounds, OC rounds (Pepper Spray is an incorrectly adopted term. It's actually called OC spray or Oleoresin Capsicum), High volume water streams, Tear Gas, CED (Conducted Energy Device (commonly labeled as 'Taser')), to list a few examples.
If anyone here is a fan of Dog the Bounty Hunter (I'm not really) but I've noticed on his recent shows that they now carry paintball style arms with OC rounds in them.
At least it doesn't look as goofy as the MK4's they are dragging along on their thighs.
These are called less lethal because they do not effect as a lethal option, however there is risk of a side effect of it's use becomming lethal.
For example: Use of the CED. Some persons with existing heart conditions could die as a result of a CED being use on them.
This is not to say it's a poor choice for a defensive item. If a person does not want to die as a result of a CED being use on them, then they should consider obeying the law and acting responsible.
On a side note, I recently found some 12 gauge Tear Gas rounds at work in one of our ammo storage containers. I thought that was cool. They look like a plastic slug.
