no, 0351 is a grunt (infantry) contract..... but combat engineers have a much better life than grunts do, so kudos for wanting that job.
Exactly. I spent 3 months at Ft. Knox, KY, training in very close proximity to an Army BCT. You could tell when the Drill Sergeants wanted to go beserk, but couldn't. I'm just worried that the trend will continue on it's current downward spiral, instead of getting better.
we had a recruit "Mohommad" from New York.... he got a lot of attention, because he was going into the air wing. No idea how the Corps let that happen... but it's true. The dude was a terrible recruit, too.
We also had a drill instructor attempt to throw a recruit's canteen down a hillside to mess with him... but the canteen was dummy corded (some thick string attached the canteen to the recruit's belt, to prevent him from losing it).... So the DI threw the canteen, it went about 6 feet, and then snapped back and hit the DI right in his face. Funniest moment of bootcamp right there.... My bearing flew right out the window.
Okay guys... here's some options I'm looking at once i return to the states:
MSG (embassy) duty:
I'd extend for another year, meaning I'd have three years left, and I'd go to three different countries, spending a year at each one guarding the US Embassy. You live like a king, and everyone I've talked to has reccommended it.
Downside: Three years away from the States... and other than maybe a week of leave (twice a year, most likely), I'd be away from home... most likely missing every holiday for two of those three years. Female relationships would be... well, zero, back in the states (i don't have a girlfriend, so it's not a huge thing...)
Upside: Totally awesome job... lots of free time to get an online degree in something (that's what most guys do), living abroad in an apartment with a hired maid and hired cook... I'd save tons of money... I might meet a foreign chick to date.... cool story to tell the grandkids.
MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command):
I'd extend for another year, just like MSG duty, but I'd be doing all the Special Ops stuff that people read about in books and magazines. I'd be at the tip of the spear of the first guy in the battle... I'd learn another language most likely, get jump or scuba certified, maybe sniper.... you know, the whole "best of the best" type thing.
Downside: I'd have to hit the gym every day until I returned to the states, and even then, it'll be a struggle physically to keep up with that kind of OP-Tempo. Who knows what exactly I'd be doing... there's no garuntees in that job field right now. I might not even become an operator.... just a linguist or something. Chances are decent that i'd be doing something high-speed, but maybe not. The biggest thing would be the physical aspect of it... Sure, I'm fit, but these guys border on the insane.
Upside: Live every little kid's dream. I'd be superman, if it all worked out. I would be that guy who would actually do the things every mil-simmer dreams about doing every time they read a SWAT magazine or play paintball.
Finish out my 4-year contract as a Tank Mechanic:
Downside: I hate my job in the rear. It sucks. I'm soooo glad i'm playing grunt over here, and not in my MOS fixing tanks. Life in 29 Palms sucks.... and I'd probably drink myself dumb.
Something I haven't thought of yet.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
