A mask and BBD are needed, I don't use a cup but maybe thats just being foolish. Hand shots don't hurt that bad, I can understand gloves for camoflage but not to protect against pain. Chest protector, if you're a girl sure but not necessary for guys.

In my opinion:
The mask is a must. Chest armor is unnecessary. Gloves aren't necessary, but are a plus. The cup doesn't apply to me. A barrel plug is a good precaution.
What do you use?
A Mask, Gloves, and a Barrel Plug.

There is one that lives only to lay waste to all other instruments, leaving them
lying blue and lifeless in the swath of destruction that is the Trumpetís fury...

Then there's... The dark side...

Goggles necessary.

Barrel plug necessary.

Others aren't 'necessary'

kid i know busted up one of his ribs a month back on a 4-wheeler accident.
hes got a chest protector for now till he heals up
Ive seen a couple of younger girls playing with chest protectors, they got things growin and it can hurt bad if they get hit their.
The point im making is chest protectors are not for wimps or the weak, they do have their place, plus if you are playing outlaw with no chrono (bad idea all around) they can help avoid scars.

Im kinda the same way about cups, I dont use one and there have been plenty of times ive wished otherwise but i can say that i get more painful welts on the side of ribs and hips.

hopefully i dont have to comment on my feelings of masks and BBD's

The goggle systems or paintball mask is a mandatory thing in place everywhere you go. Same thing with teh BBD's so those two are not only neccessary they are mandatory.

Gloves it depends. Some people have sensative hands so they may need extra protection.

Chest protectors are something else that is optional. I can see if someone got into an accident, injured their chest, and the doctor said they could play paintball as long as they wear a chest protector. A few years back I met a kid who had a heart murmor and the family doctor had no problem with him playing paintball as long as he wore a chest protector.

a cup is actually twoo bulky in my opinion. That is why I wear slider shorts, but groin protection is groin protection. I have been hit there once before and it took me out of the game for about 10 minutes. I think that should be mandatory for the guys.

Could have been worse, you could have been a man.

In the end, Masks is the most important thing. We all know why, and whoever said it is optional should be beaten for loss of common sense.

Only safety that is required is a mask. Everything else is preference, but masks on at all times when in a shooting area.

Also on the sidelines. There are stupid people. We were out, and in the dead zone, way away from the field. Than a bunch of idiots come running over trying to hide in the deadzone. We tell them to move it. Then even bigger idiots (some on my team) fired into the deadzone. A barrage of paintballs fell down and I was cussing at them. Stupidity, sometimes there's no safety for that.
