Then get one. They're a C-note at a gun show, maybe $10 more at a gun store. Why do you think I own one? Other than the whole entire awesomeness that is the "Mosin".

Local Fleet Farm is selling 91/30s for $95 + sales tax.

Mosins are cheap. Just read up on how to select a good one, go to the store (or gun show), and examine them. Pick the best of the litter and go have some fun.

I've thought about one as a project gun, but I have higher priorities first. I nearly grabbed a private sale one locally because it was one of the United States-produced Mosins ordered by the Czar during WW1, but just missed it (and no, I would not alter that one. It would stay as issued)

What does ammo run for one of those?

I can get Brown Bear hunting ammo at Gander Mountain for about $15 a box. It's usually about $7/20 for the surplus stuff at a gun show, and can be had as cheap as $145/880 rounds of Russian Silver Tip, before shipping.

EDIT: You know, I need to order some more ammo. And T, might as well get one. As they dry up, the price will only rise. The M38s and M44s used to be $40, now they command hundreds, and even the big 91/30s are slowly creeping up.

Ammo (only 100 rnds brown bear soft point), gun, and whatnot, I got out of it for $140, so very nice deal overall.

Just make sure you don't do it to a rare one like a finn or anything like that...

I've only ever bought brown bear soft points so far for $9 per box-o-twenty...but from here on out I plan on buying surplus ammo at $80-ish per 440 round spam can.

You can find Wolf ammo 7.62x54R for fairly cheap, $7-9/20 these days. Sometimes less.

I realize that the corrosive surplus stuff can be had for far cheaper, but at the price of Wolf ammo for practice I would probably just stay with the newer non-corrosive stuff since I just don't want to deal with the extra cleaning. I know how to deal with it, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Funny, but the priority I alluded turned up in the same post. I need to make sure my current guns can eat before I go around adding more. I'm doing ok on some of the calibers, but I'm pretty low on others.

Though you are right that the 91/30s will eventually go up. I remember seeing them for upwards of $150-175 during the Obama-election-mad-rush (right along with the $400 SKSs and $500 WASRs). Glad those days are behind us.

We'll just have to see. I have a good bolt gun, but more is better.

Oh, I wouldn't do that. If I was going to butcher anything, it'd just be a standard 91/30.

Honestly, my Mosin is about the only gun I don't mind running corrosive ammo in. You just pull out and wash the bolt (I've seen guys do it n the dishwasher), Windex the bbl, and finish cleaning normally. It's a dead simple rifle, and it's built like a tank.

The dead simplicity is one of the things that drew me to a Mosin for a possible project gun.

One of the things that drew me is the ability to use it as a supreme war club when the ammo runs out. :D

But you can't put a spike bayonet on a kukri and reach out 5 feet or more :)

Not to mention that...hell...the mosin probably costs less LOL!

^ Not true! Just picked up a genuine military kukri. You can find some nice handmade ones for under a hundred. Even the $30 carbon by Cold Steel is a nice blade...or you can spend 300 on a San Mai III. None of this is to say I don't love my Mosin...cause I do. :D

I've got one of those Cold Steel kukris. It's pretty good for $30. I've seen the "genuinely made in Nepal" ones in a smilar price point as well, but I don't know how good they really are (being made in Nepal doesn't equate made by the Gurkha, or made properly).

The Mosin does have more reach though. I just might have to grab one because it's a gun every gun owner should have. But, ammo first.

Oh, and welcome back Tex.

The RIGHT handmades are good quality. I'm sure there are cheap knock offs (Hey, it's just like anything else right?). I'll post pics of the one I just snagged from the sergeant when I get a chance.

And T, undomesticated equines could not keep me.
