flo, please, don't try to build another one of these, you got lucky this time. also, if your expansion chamber was 1 1/2 inches, what was the diameter of the barrel?

no, the diameter of the pipe was 1 1/2", the length of the expansion chamber was 12". so it was a foot long and 1 1/2" wide.

These things are only unsafe if you don't follow the directions right.

Here's a nice site I refer to: Building Air Cannons

i know that. you had a expansion chamber with a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. did you have a barrel of the same diameter?

I'm very glad to see this pinned.

How much do you think the chill from the CO2 effected the preformance of this. What was the original bursting strength of the piping you used?

The temperature change probably had very little to do with it, PVC and ABS are built to be very temperature-resistant. The fact that florentine used the very measured and scientific, and no doubt brilliant filling method of 'Open the tank for a sec' and dumped 800 PSI into a 350 PSI chamber is what caused it to go nuts.

If you MUST use that method, at least tap a blowout valve and a gauge on it.

QFT. not only was this dangerous for florentine, but if it hadn't happened to him, i can guarantee it would've happened to one of the guys he built it for...and then, not only would there have been potentially a severe injury and/or fatality, but florentine would've been up to his neck in lawsuits.

So I DID read the first few pages of the thread, but then I had to comment. Was the expansion chamber PVC? Or was it Steel?
