So today in my AP History class we were debating who we thought the most successful colony was and how influencing it was on our world today. Many of us chose New England due to it's ability to adapt when population increase slowed and how it was sort of the big lighthouse signifying the dream that came with becoming a colonist. One of my friends chose another colony and said that New England was not a good colony to represent todays world because it's government was essentially a socialism. So we are going to continue tomorrow and I was hoping to find some information that could be used to argue that our government is very close to becoming a socialism. So could anyone hook me up with helpful links? (this isn't a hw assignment I just want to prove this kid wrong)

You won't find anything because our country is not anywhere near being a fully socialist state.

I said leading to, I don't need to say it is already socialist, I just need to be able to say that we do one or two things like a socialist government, which i'm sure we do.

"do one or two things like a socialist government, which i'm sure we do. "

Restate this part for me. I am pretty sure I know what you mean, but I want to make sure.

One or two things we could do to become socialist?
1) Overthrow the government and wage genocide on the entire population.
2) Install a socialist government and new socialist population.

Ignoring the socialism claims, I'd say that Virginia would be a great colony.

"He that does not work, does not eat."

EDIT:

I would argue New England was not socialist.

Why?

1. Government did NOT control any industries, a trademark of socialism.

2. Government did NOT force people to "redistribute wealth," though private charity was greatly encouraged.

That said, I still think Virginia's a better example, but I digress.

You guys confuse yourselves. OP what are you asking.

Socialists are people who only drink at parties. Socialism is the disease you get when drinking at parties becomes a habit.

To clarify, I need two examples of todays Government being socialist, not too hard I don't think, secondly, New England did not control business but it did control exactly who was let into it's society which pretty much decided everything else. Anyway could someone just give me two things in todays government that could be considered socialist by 7 tommorrow? k thnx bi.

That doesn't work in todays society either, its called mooching off everyone else, if you don't have a job. :/

How can you say that the United States is moving toward socialism with a straight face?

Seriously?

Although New England wasnt "socialist" as we would understand the tern today, individual colonies within the region were administered on a communal basis - with land, livestock & tools being owned and managed by the community as a whole rather than by individual families.

~ Believe me, dear Sir: there is not in the American states a man who more cordially loves a union with his country than I do. 1. The recent take over of GM. Traditionally, a socialist government has strong control of elements of the national economy, even though they lack full control (Communists control 100% of all aspects). This is a huge jump towards socialism, and even the fringe socialists in our country proudly say that.

2. The bank bailouts. Same story, even if the government didn't take the same level of control (such as firing CEOs).

More to come.

See above.

Yes, I can say it with a straight face.

We're not totally there yet, but we're on our way to it.

Everyone pays taxes which, among other things, go to the state owned police force and roadways. Everyone pays into it, the benefits are shared equally: socialism.
