Dug out the tiki torches today. Great emergency lighting.

So I've been a hardcore lurker in this thread... simply because I find it interesting but have no knowledge or experience to contribute whatsoever...

But I thought some of you would get a kick out of this:
(Be sure to read the video description before attempting this yourself... :o )

^^^Hahaha, true. I suppose I can contribute a bit of experience there... :P

But perhaps I shall revive the topic of blades - How does one determine if a knife is of high quality or not? I have a roughly 6" fixed blade that I picked up which has no manufacturer on it or anything. That's not a good sign probably. But I'm at a loss to determine if what I have is "so-so" or just complete crap...

Tuesday.June 5.2012.
Day 199.

The more carbon there is in the steel, the stronger (and more brittle it is), stainless steel is just an alloy of iron, which has carbon and chromium in it - the chromium prevents the rusting to occur.

High carbon steels are easier to sharpen, and hold an edge better - but rust unless oiled regularly.
Stainless steels take longer to sharpen, retain an edge reasonably well, and do not rust as quuickly.

Are there no markings at all, not even like an Rc followed by some numbers tattooed on the hilt ?

What kind of grip does it have, and is it full tang ?

No idea if it's full tang. It's got quite a bit of heft to it, and the center of mass is pretty much right on the first finger indentation. Not sure if that helps at all.

The grip itself is a fairly hard rubber of some sort.

The only marking is "Stainless China" at the base of the blade. >.>

Here's a pic of each side...
For reference, the TOTAL length is 9-7/8"

Most likely Mtech or roughly equivalent maker. There are quite a few lower-end knife makers that import from China.

Probably make a good, cheap beater for truck, boat, whatever duty. It might be a full tang, but it's more likely a rat tail tang with a heavy buttcap. Can you see any of the tang on the buttcap?
