Apex is the way to go if you want more range. You can also put the apex tip on other barrels.

As for use...I dunno. The ball does go farther, but it also seemed easier for people to dodge them. My buddy was using a Apex tip and trying to hit someone down range who was standing in the middle of a field, but everytime he would fire the guy would just side step the balls. The ball looks like it sorta just floats...but I'm not sure if its real or just an optical illusion. My buddy is thinking of just going back to his accurate J&J barrel. Myself, I am kind of undecided until I get some good trigger time with it...last time I went out with it...I was having all sort of problem with my paint and every 5th ball or so would break.
One final point, generally most people just take the tip of the Apex and mod another barrel to get the Apex range with the accuracy of their original barrel. I am unfamiliar with the Lapco barrel that you are thinking of, but you might be able to join the two.

They put backspin on a paintball allowing a flatter trajectory. The trade off is that it tends to reduce your accuracy. Don't get the idea of being able to shoot people at 300+ feet. The Apex or Flatline don't really increase your effective range. Paintballs, no matter the barrel are just too inaccurate and are shot at too low of a velocity to be dependable at long ranges. What they do is take out the human factor of arcing up your shots.
"Marketing hype in paintball?! The nerve of some people. After all, we paintballers would never throw our hard earned cash into the magic box of marketing hype."

It'll depend on how high a setting you use on the Apex. Try it out over a chrono sometime when you have spare paint to see what I mean.
I've seen as much as 25-30 FPS variation between Apex on max and Apex off.
