It got me to thinking - I have authritus and swelling in my hands to the point where my knuckles sink below the rest of the surface of my hand. I also have ostiopena, which is a calcium deficiency not quite as bad as ostioporosis, but still causes bones to break easily. I'm guessing a direct hit to the hands would not be a good thing in my case, even though it has never happened.
I found these Toxic Performance Gloves in XL so I thought I would try them. I used them this is Saturday at a Paintball outing from work. All total, I guess there was nearly 30 of us playing, including 6 or so kids that weren't really with our group.
We played a "crack house" round where there were defenders of the house and attackers. I was a defender.
I took a direct hit on the back of my left hand from probably 30 feet and didn't even feel it. My daughter pointed out that I had been hit there. So I have to say they worked well.
Things I like about the glove: 1) Available in XL and they fit very well, even with the constant swelling in my hands. The half fingers come to just below the first joints after your knuckles. There was no problem at all forming a complete fist and opening and closing your hand. 2) The gloves are black so they do not stand out, though the logo may stand out a little. It is small, but is yellow. 3) The armor seemed to work well. I took a direct hit and didn't feel it and had other its near the hands and did not feel them either.
Things I don't like about the glove: 1) You can't put your hands into your pants pockets with the gloves on. The armor hangs on the outside of your pants. You have to take your gloves of to get stuff out of your regular pants pocket, though in vest pockets or cargo pockets, this was not an issue. 2) The palm is black dyed suede or leather and it fades on your hands, mostly where you sweat. It is hard to wash the dye off of your hands. I would also imagine that these gloves are going to get pretty stinky since you probably don't want to wash them. I would image that they will also get stiff over time like a golf glove, therefore will probably be just as disposable.
In short, I like these gloves, and probably won't play again without them.
