So this is really random, but I know there are a handful of creative types around here, so I thought I'd throw this out there and see what happens.

I attend a small Christian college, and they're looking at renaming the residence halls. A new apartment building is being built for next year and needs a name, so it seemed a good opportunity to rename other buildings as well (which currently have uncreative names such as North Hall and East Campus Apartments).

Ideally, we'd like to have some sort of theme going on. For example, some campuses go with trees (Elm, Willow, Oak, etc.) or whatever. Any "Christian themes" are obviously cool, but that's far from a necessity. There are two residence hall "neighborhoods" (as some campuses call them) which could possibly use names as well.

We have 7-8 buildings that could use names, but you don't need to have a whole set in mind or anything. If you have just overall theme ideas, single building names, neighborhood names, or whatever - post up! ANY idea that you might have could potentially help us out a lot!

Thanks in advance for your input.

Well, you could obviously do christian names... and go based on the style of the building and gender of it (eg, moses for by the river, abraham for the biggest hall, mathew mark luke and john for 4 close to each other, then the wifes or something for the girls.

At the college my mom works at, they went off of city names (NY, and then subdivisions of such like 'the bronx', and boston w/ cambridge, north end, etc). Its kind of cool, because they decorated based on that.

I prefer something like Arsenio and AnthonyMichael Halls and Lovewill Terrace and Never Terrace/Torn Apartments. If you want to go King James on it, how about WhosHall and WesHall, or HesHall. Maybe ThisToosHall. The baseball team can live in Touchem Hall, instead of Youcantwinem Hall. I don't think a Christian school would want Killem Hall, though.

I can think of several schemes, some less serious and some actual ideas:

Ra, Apophis, Anubis, Baal, Set... etc. (Stargate / Mythology... and interesting trivia how my place of employment used to name servers, though many are still in service)

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta... etc. (NATO Phonetics)

Joab, Gideon, Ehud, Adino, Eleazar... etc. (Old Testament Warriors)

Or you could list all the Judges.

SMSU in Marshall, MN named one of it's dorms Kama Sutra. But somehow I would guess that roughly 30% of your student population wouldn't know what it was, 25% would be offended (of this only 5% would actually be offended, the other 20% would act offended because they thought it was the right thing to do), 25% would be married and think it's a good idea...on second thought, you could name it Kama Sutra and use it as married housing, and the last 15% would be pagan public schoolers that wouldn't be able to walk by it without giggling. (I'm not trying to bash your school. I went to a really small Christian College in MN and if your school was anything like mine, these percentages would hold true.)

OR you could use obscure and humorous Bible references to name them like Proverbs 21:19, Numbers 22:21-29, 2 Kings 2:23-24, Deut 23:12-13. This way there's the allusion of being holy...but it's actually a huge inside joke.
If you are a Christian paintballer, put this in your sig

Actually, I think some biblical cities could make cool names. Jericho, Corinth, Ninevah, etc... maybe?

We actually do have four small apartment buildings that could be the four gospels; we could even refer to that block as the gospels or something. There are also three dorm buildings that kind of go together, and then one large dorm building and two large apartment buildings that are kind of off on their own.

Maybe we could take your city idea and use biblical names somehow. Not sure what the subdivisions would be though...

I'm going to have to guess that those are pirates. Heh. I have a roommate who would LOVE to name the buildings after pirates... :pirate: (I never knew that smilie existed!)

As a bit of a fan myself, I can definitely appreciate the Stargate references! But I don't think most people would go for the mythology bit of it around here.

The Old Testament warriors thing is kind of a cool idea... B)

My mother used to work at HP. They named servers stuff like Pokemon, Dilbert Characters, anything they thought was amusing. In addition, they named the rooms "Shuttle Bay" and "Holodeck" in reference to Star Trek.

I'd suggest Pokemon city names. The original ones.

Hmm...

Now I'll have to bring forward the idea to start naming rooms as appropriate. We are an IT company after all; we belong doing stuff like that.
