would a barrel bag be needed for a gun that you must cock after every shot?

Yes and no. Most places that require barrel bags instead of barrel plugs allow pump markers to have have barrel plugs, but barrel bags are still safer, and a BBD of some sort is required for ALL markers.

On one hand it's safety, treat every marker as if it is cocked and ready to fire, even if you KNOW it's cleared. That is the best way to prevent accidents

The other part is you can't allow some markers to completely bypass safety rules, then people will argue that they know their marker is unloaded and off, so they don't need one, or will complain about special treatment, etc.

Some sort of BBD is always needed, even for pumps. Granted, a misfire with a pump is only going to shoot a single ball instead of a burst, but that single ball could still end up going somewhere its not wanted...like my eye. Bags are generally better than plugs, and plugs are better than nothing, so please - use SOMETHING.

I would say to use a barrel bag/condom. They are the safest thing there is, and now many fields are requiring them instead of plugs.

Never think about not using anything. It is not safe.

Use a barrel bag. Better safe than sorry.

If you are playing outlaw than a Barrel plug would be fine with a pump marker because you, and your friends know that if it does misfire and the plug is propelled from hte barrel than the marker is now uncocked and cannot be misfired until it is pumped again. However at a field you should always use a barrel bag/condom if that is what they require, because if Pumpers start getting special benefits other people maybe through spite or maybe through ignorance could start just using plugs and than the area would be less safe, because it's harder to keep up with that many people when running a business.

barrel bags are mandatory on all of my markers, so im pretty good there. i see where theyre coming from especially if you have a short barreed pump, like the tigershark i have with the 8.5 inch spyder barrel, i need to use the flatline bag for it since it slips over the handle. but for the blackhawk, its a regular bag because of the length of the whole thing. ditto for the smallness of the usp pistol i have, which might get traded in with a bunch of stuff for a couple more pumps lol. i know im going to be buying barrel bags, cheap insurance to guarantee that theres no way i'll accidentally shoot someone.

I meant could I use a plug instead.

Because on my splatmaster it is quite big for a barrel bag.

You could get a flatline bag...

But yes you can use a barrel plug if nothing else. Something is better than nothing because unless its one of those little mini barrel plugs it not going to take an eye out even if it does shoot you...

I use a SpecOps flatline barrel sock on my Sheridan. It works fine.

A flatline barrel bag should work, just tie down the string. Granted, though barrel bags should be used at all times, pumps don't really need it. As long as you clear the chamber after the game, it's not going to fire--Period. However, for various reasons, all guns should have barrel bags when playing.
