Taking the barrel off is perfectly acceptable. Without one the gun won't shoot but 5' in most cases. I've yet to see a gun shoot farther than I can throw or faster without a barrel, but if I do then that is no logner acceptable. I see the finger as a bad idea because its not that hard to take your finger off....Maybe you have to sneeze and you move your hand to cover your mouth and when you sneeze, your finger on the trigger tenses and you shoot someone...If you need to find your barrel plug and just didn't leave it somewhere, we set the gun down pointed away from anyone and look for it.

I'd give them a warning. If it happens more than once, however, I'd call them on it.

Every time somebody shoots at someone who isn't wearing a mask, someone drowns a sack of puppies.
Every time somebody purposely overshoots someone, a dolphin is harpooned and eaten alive.
Every time somebody wipes, a family of bunnies gets run over by a Steamroller. That's why they have to reproduce so fast. Theoretically, that's how dinosaurs became extinct.

Lol, wut? With both my Spyder Clone and Ego, the thing will shoot a good 30' or so without a barrel...

I would have to agree with him. With or without a barrel, a paintball will exit a marker at the same speed no matter what. As part of a ref clinic, we have to fire our markers without a barrel. Lets just say that without a barrel can still cause plenty of damage.

At the field I ref at, we de-gas the marker, turn the marker upside down, and have them stick their finger in the barrel until they can get a barrel sock on it.

I do think a finger in the barrel is good till they either find theirs or buy one from the shop. I also know the damage it can do to your finger, I met a guy last week who's index finger is bent at an angle do to the fact that he accidentally shot himself. Now, he makes everyone with him who has a paintball gun, have a BBD.

Well, I usually tend to run things like this: Barrel sleeves only! I had an incident(this was me, although it's hard to admit) where I had a barrel plug in my gun in the staging area and started to walk to the field when I accidentally pulled the trigger. The barrel plug flew a good 30 feet.

We are very strict on safety so I usually carry around extra barrel sleeves in my pocket. When a player looses it I hand them another one and tell them they owe me a dollar. It usually works pretty good to get them to remember those things.

If I'm out of sleeves then I'll make them either stay on the field with their gun, or I'll make them leave their gun on the field while they go and get another barrel sleeve.

But, again, our field has more of a no tolerance policy for stuff like this.

Ok i may be old school here. I would not go for the finger in the barrel but i would temporarily confiscate the marker degas it ( point it in a safe direction ( i beleive not pointing at anything you do not intend to shoot is firearms safety rule #1( directly at the ground is usually safest)and fire any paintball already chambered, airing the gun down. This would occur only in an area where everybody has there goggles on. our feild does not allow renters to disconnect anything on rentals. Then i would escort the individual to the pro shop or equipment counter to get a new one. I know you can lose them our rental guns have them attached but i managed to lose two of them off my own personal gun in two games back to back this weekend. We will not allow gun owners to gas up a gun with out one on and will loan you one for the day or ask you to purchase one before we allow you to play. Our #1 rule is stated as follows barrel plug off = all goggles on, goggles off = barrel plugs on. Also make sure they are on properly. A worn elastic band is as bad as no sleeve at all and a plug should fit snuggly(as a ref i preferr to see sleeves with good elastic.)

i will give up my marker only after you pry my cold rigid fingers from the trigger
