This has to be one of the more bizarre stories I have heard.

Kind of curious why the guy had a sword in his car. I know if I was bringing a weapon for protection, I want something a bit more useful (a handgun at minimum).

I guess because he can.

That's hilarious.

Though my favorite part of those kinds of stories isn't always the story itself, but how people respond in the comments section:

User Team_Banzai comes to mind (almost halfway down the comments box on my screen) going on about how he bleongs to a medieval events organization
Right after him is AnswersToNoOne... "He pulls a lead pipe, you pull a samurai sword... that's the TERRE HAUTE way" (classic movie reference )

"In the mean time, the man with the sword is not facing any charges at this time."

Which is fine... but here in Canada a guy is charged for endangering the public for using an unloaded shotgun for helping a neighbor protect his property from vandals... and the vandals get hit with ONE charge of underage drinking.

Clearly, unloaded shotguns are extremely dangerous weapons. Just because they cannot physically harm people, does not mean that the shotgun could not damage the persons self esteem. Vandals and criminals have feelings too.

Who doesn't keep a samurai sword in their car? Hell, I keep a gas mask in my back pack. Along with silly string.

I personally don't carry a samurai sword, normally I just carry a hunting knife. However, I have several friends with the license to carry a full length blade, including one friend that did indeed have a samurai sword and did carry it on him, and in his car most of the time. It's not really all that weird.

"Of course it is, it adds more grip, greater stability"

A license for a sword? I have honestly never heard of such a thing.

In Minnesota (using it as the example since I know its laws best), there are no state laws on the books regarding blades. Anyone can own one, and in theory anyone can carry one. City laws are a bit different though, and can vary (most commonly, cities would restrict to carrying only folding knives in their boundaries, though some just had a size limit)

I used to spend some time in Kansas, and I ran into no trouble carrying my usual folders. I don't know what their laws are regarding fixed blades though. I know people there who owned all sorts of blades, and none of them needed a license to own/carry them.

Granted, my information is limited to a couple states and is somewhat dated. I used to be really into knives for defense until I got my CCW. Now the knife is a backup to something with a bit more reach and power.

The thing that I'm surprised about is that most of those replica swords aren't sharp. They're displays only The driver must have put an edge on it and been carrying it as a weapon in mind.

True, but it doesn't mean you can't sharpen a replica blade. It takes some time and a lot of effort to do it right, but it can be done. Mind you the article doesn't say if it's a replica blade or not. For all we know it could have been an authentic sword that he got as a gift or was going to give.

There are plenty of swords out there that ship with a real blade that was left unsharpened/"safety edge" like a replica.

Sharpening them doesn't take too much effort, just time.
