Here's how I clean mine. I find this to be the easiest way:
Edit: The picture is defunct, and the bathtub method later proved to be not effective enough at getting out stains. It also made a royal mess in the bathtub, which required significant effort to clean. My recommended method: take it in the shower. Paint gets forced into fabric when it hits and breaks on a vest. You need spraying water to force it out.
You CAN machine wash non-mesh vests, although, as stated before and after, it's not recommended. If you wrap it up very well so there's no parts hanging loose, and machine wash it with Woolite, it generally won't hurt it. Don't make a habit of it, and only do it as a last resort when it's positively filthy. I only did it once, before I sold my Sabre vest. The buyer was very happy with it.
