Problem: A backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a criss-cross pattern layered with 1 foot vertical spacing.

Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast does the trailer with the backhoe have to be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no headwind and no braking by the driver who is oblivious of the situation . . )

Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above .

Answer - It doesn't really matter... The point is that the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge .

 That's funny. That driver clearly wasn't paying much attention to the road, or forgot what his cargo was.

I was beginning to wonder how on earth a driver could not realize that his truck is at least 10 feet taller than the bridge...
Well that goes to show you the intelligence of some people....

Well, I mean you gotta give some slack to those truck drivers.

Unless they destroy an overpass using nothing but their cargo, which happens to be a very expensive machine used in building such structures lol.

Actually it seems only about 4ft too tall for that over pass the way to was loaded on the trailer (improperly). The arm of the backhoe is to be resting on the rear most of the trailer, so if a situation like this does occur it will be forced off the edge of the bed and not impale the bridge like above.

yeah, same here...angle of the arm, etc. maybe somebody who's already got a degree in civil or mechanical engineering could answer this...i'm still working on mine.
