So I was talking to my dad about the expenses in paintball and gun prices came up and he said something that I never truely thought about: What really makes that gun worth over one thousand dollars?

After all I've thought of, all I can think of is brand name. Similar to Nike, Puma, etc.

I have a hard time believing that Ego's or DM series guns, or any other high end marker, are really worth their weight in gold simply because they're "lighter" than the previous generation, or are slightly more "efficient," "quiet" or "reliable." Let alone electronics... which are dirt cheap. So they reprogrammed the board to talk to you. So what? Does that REALLY constitute an extra five hundred dollars?

Thoughts?

You're absolutely correct. Hence why '05 Egos go for about $250 now, down $1000 from MSRP.

No.

But will people spend it?

Yes its just like everything in the world of course they make it for less than they pay to make it thats how the world works if you wanna make one yourself go ahead.

If its too much go buy a used gun they are just as good as newer models just a little heavier most of the time and slightly different parts.

Peace,

ok, ok...I do gotta point out that part of the cost of anything has to be the cost to recoup what they have invested into the design of something.....Now what that cost should be.......I dunno

Heavier? Huh? That's like saying "we've reduced the recoil!" There is not difference. Mainly because there is none. It's a sorry excuse.

I don't know why people keep buying that stuff. I don't and won't. New at least.

I see $500 as a decently priced high end gun. But beyond that? Forget it.

What design cost? They pump out a new one each year. Can't be that pricey.

Now I see your guys points, but I must say I for one would be willing to spend more (but not a 1,000) for a gun that was effiecent, light, and fast. As I said I'm not going to spend 1k, but to spend maybe 500ish for a gun that is effcient and reliable? Sure.

Just trying to play devils advocate here

Fen, you're right about the design cost being minimal on a marker that is essentially the same as the previous year. However, going to a talking board probably would cost quite a bit to design. It would have to have at least SOME major differences from the previous electronics. I'm not at all suggesting that they are not going overboard. I'm also not saying their prices are justified. Just saying that that IS one reason (seems to me) that initial prices of ANY new product would be higher. The other thing is, new products are always a risk.

Again, not justifying prices, just pointing out some factors that may (or may not) be involved.

A talking board? What for though? "Because you can hear it!" And? I'd rather read it. I can read it faster than I can hear it.
