I like the .270, though I don't really think of it as a varmint shot at all.

@ PW

You've got the Mosin and the AK, so you've got intermediate and distance rounds covered. No need for the .308 because anything that it can do can be done by one of those two (of course, if you want a .308 that's a perfectly justifiable reason to get one)

It's up to you, but I'm not sure what caliber you want/need for varmint. I'd just use .223 or .22 LR myself dependent on the size of the varmints, but that's just me.

Nah. Been over on the Long Range Hunting site, and damn that looks like fun. A lot of their stuff is geared toward varmints like chucks and coyotes and medium game like antelope and Dall sheep. Ain't too much of that in my area, but I know I can get a few really long shots on whitetail if I wanted.

I keep stumbling my dumb ass over to that place about 2 or 3 times a year and getting an itch for a "way out" rifle.

Went to go shoot a few rounds through my stoeger on Sunday. So far I am very happy with this shotgun. Also, pecan trees make fun targets....

Nice build so far. What else are you planning on doing with it though?

I hope this doesn't turn into a "bolt anything I can on it" gun. Then I would be sad, for it'd be a waste of a good AR.

Shot about 250 rounds through my Citadel officer 1911 last weekend. Not a single malfunction. Accuracy wasn't match, but I would say most shots were within a softball sized group at about 20 feet; plenty accurate enough for self defense.

HELL no!!
I don't attach things to my guns unless I have a reason.

IMHO, a general purpose rifle only needs 3 things- light, sight, sling.
However, there are a few other things that I feel improve the handling, and therefore the usefulness of the rifle. For ME, at least- a little extra weight is a fair trade-off if it does what I want.
Like the ACS- I find I can get a much better cheek weld faster (Almost like a pillow. :)), and helps to counterbalance extra weight up front (ie, from a light/VFG). And I like the vert grip for handling, as well as another storage option.
Plus, I got an INSANE deal on both of them. ;)

All that will be changing is:
Light+ mount (can't shoot what you can't see...)
BCM's Gunfighter CH (better design, better for using 1 hand to charge the gun/clear malfunction. I like doing that, and it's almost impossible with a standard CH)
XTM rail panels (better anti-heat, grip)
Possibly an MOE grip, as I want something that fills my ape hands a little better.
And a '203.

I'm kidding!! Geez...

Well overdue, but good to have pinned.

On topic...

Gun show this next weekend. Might sneak out and see what's available at a price point I can afford. Worst case I can always walk out with some ammunition and mags. I've got to be careful though. Been itching for some stuff that I technically don't need, but would be nice to have. I have no good reason to complain or need something. Worst part is there's this illusion I have money when a fair amount of income has come in. Reality is though that I know a fair amount of it is going to have to go back out soon for bills and other stuff.

Second, got a friend locally that I'm trying to get into shooting. Hope that works and I can create another addict.

Also, for anybody interested in a zombie themed 3-gun shoot, there's going to be another Outbreak Omega here in Minnesota this summer. I'm saving some extra cash now for the ammo to use at this. Last year was great, and I expect good stuff from this year's one.

Last, because I feel like I want to start something up in here..... Wolf ammo in an AR-15. Yay or nay?

Sure, it'll be dirtier, and that might cause a problem if the gun gets too fouled too fast.

But is it really going to do any damage? (Excessive wear on the extractor, other potential damage, etc)

Spoiler

Wolf ammo in
.223 barrel- no
5.56 barrel-yes

Personal preference is no but I shoot a bit more in terms of precision than in bulk. Herters 9mm in steel case has been rocking out of my G19 and Sig 226. Highly recommended for 9mm uppers. My old Kel Tec Sub 2000 LOVED the stuff.

I bring it up because costs of ammunition are making some shooting somewhat tricky.

I'm more of the AK guy, and I'm working on converts, but the AR-15 is still more popular among my local shooting friends than the Kalashnikov. Wolf ammo cuts cost in half for them (or more), and is what I've used in both 5.56 and 7.62x39 AKs without issue. I used to reload a lot, but I just never have the time and the 5.56 reloading tools belonged to my father, so when I moved out that made it a bit trickier to do.

Just point out how the AK is cheaper to buy and shoot. And easier to maintain. And simpler to use. And generally more reliable. And so on ad nauseum. You very well might make an AK enthusiast out of the newbie yet.
