Gas Paintball Mask Project I cant decide if I want a single or double canister Rate Topic: ***** 1 Votes

I have been reading online in forums about people not knowing how to produce a gas mask for paintball. I want one too so I have decided to use my Helix Vents mask and purchase one of these respirators. I figure I can just epoxy it all together and use hot water to remold the respirator if it is not the desired fit. I will also drill holes for ventilation and leave the canisters with no filters.
Should I order the single or double canister?
I figured the double would be less obtrusive but the single would look pretty classic.

Rather than epoxy it, couldn't you just weave the straps into the mask?

This will also keep me from eating paint.

Yes but if you finished the edges it would look like it was one piece. I will try different things and decide what looks best. I was just thinking the dual canister will just make my head a bigger target. What do you think?

The one thing I see when people attempt the whole gas mask look is that they look too much like respirators. Here's the wikipedia link to the M40 Field Protective Mask. It has the output look of a double canister but instead uses only one filter. The benefit of using one canister/filter is that you can put the canister on the check opposite of the one you sight down your stock with.

On second thought... That article has a rather bad image of what the aesthetic I'm talking about is.

I am going to do my best to make the respirator and mask look as one. It won't look exactly like a modern gas mask but kind of a space marine looking sci-fi whatever.I never thought of the reason for just the one side canister. I think I will buy the double and block one side now. Thanks for helping my make my decision.
I promise to post my finished product. The whole get up also includes a child's bike helmet.. Don't laugh, you will see.

Neat project! I suggest using some small screws from inside the mask into the respirator. While the epoxy will clean up and make it look good, I think the screws would help you hold it together.

Are you planning to cut off the circle pieces and attach those to the mask? or attach the whole assembly?

Another useful technique to increase strength is to use fiberglass tape with your epoxy. Done well, this will blend your seam and is easily painted to match your mask.

I'm planning to attach the whole respirator to the mask. I will probably cut it up a bit to have it fit tight and not stick out too far at the mouthpiece.
