They're fairly low power all things considered.
And the ammunition is esoteric.
Seriously, for anything (fictional zombies, criminals that break in, or any other scenario requiring more weaponry than a handgun), your better off with an AK. Or an AR15 if you really want the lightweight.

I'd rather have almost any rifle instead of the M1 carbine. It doesn't offer a whole lot of advantage, and it has plenty of downsides.

It has a well documented history with the .30 round not being powerful enough, when compared to other rifle rounds.

In comparison ballistics wise, it's basically a pistol round/smg round.
That said, for a SMG, I'd rather have a design in 9mm or .45 for ammunition commonality.
