So... One step closer to understanding the universe.

Short version: Higgs field imparts particles with mass, the only proof of which is the Higgs boson. Got that?
CERN has found a Higgs boson like particle (more data needs to be analysed before it's confirmed as THE Higgs boson).

NOW...

If we find out what causes mass, will this mean that we will be able to alter mass? In other words, will we be able to take a Delta IV weighing 500, 000 lbs, reduce it to 250, 000 allowing it to reach higher velocities?

That would mean altering the physics in a small area which could be a bad thing.
Though it also means you could create energy.... I think

For the record, by "close" to the final word on whether it's Higgs Boson particle, they mean like 99.999% close.
Fo shizzle.

And it wouldn't lead to the ability to create energy (or transfer from matter to energy, as the "creation" of energy is impossible). As I understand it, it takes stupendous amounts of energy to create a Higgs Boson Particle, and within a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a second if deteriorates into smaller particles. What it does, is it essentially forms and sticks to fundamental subatomic particles that would be otherwise massless so that they may form other tangible particles such as protons, neutrons, electrons, quarks, and other atom parts. The proving of its existence and the discovering of its actual properties as opposed to its theorized ones gives us a valuable insight into the structure of the universe and the diversity of life inside of it, how matter obtains and maintains mass, and even as to the creation of the universe.

Then again I'm also not a Physics major, but that should be the gist of it.

I have zero clue what all this even means, and seriously doubt it will ever affect me.

This would literally affect everybody. The Higgs boson has been called "the God particle", not because it would explain God, but because it's so difficult to prove. I'm sure there's religious nut cases out there that will have something to say about it....

Nut jobs aside, The Higgs Boson is supposed to complete the standard model of particle physics. This would lead to new discovers like wormhole existence and being able to create them, transporter technology, replicators...... Everything in science fiction is one step closer to reality.

Think 'Deep Space Nine' with the wormhole traveling.
That, or 'Event Horizon' :o

we won't really know the potential of all this until someone grabs these 10,000 physicists and scientists, that probably have never left a lab in their lives, unless it was for a lecture hall, and make them go out and get "FILTERED"faced.

Once they have had their minds expanded, then the real exploration can happen. creation of energy. creation of life. warp speed. folding space and time in order to step through into other dimensions. stepford wives.
