I'm seriously going to buy a helmet cam for paintball. I'd like to get something that records high quality, not sub-chucky-cheese-style-youtube garbage. High def stuff. Money is not an object, if I get one, I only want to get ONE. And not buy three before I find a good one.

So,
I need some info from you blokes.

1. What helmet cam to you own/use?

2. What do you like/dislike about it?

3. What rig do you recommend?

4. Do you have some videos I can see to demonstrate the quality of your rig?

5. Do you get shot in the camera very much?

6. What's the best way to get the paint off of the camera without damaging it?

Thanks in advance,
God Bless,
Doc

Hello,

I use a Contour HD-720 You should note that there is now a 1080 version available. http://shop.helmetca...brand/twenty20/
I like it because it is completely self contained.
I recommend the goggle strap although I have made a custom quick mount out of some old ear muffs. This allows me to let other people quickly use it.
I have yet to get shot in the camera. I am looking at getting and modifying one of these for paintball. I would need to drill it out near the mic.. http://shop.helmetca...020-CHDH20.html
I haven't had to clean paint off yet..Thank goodness!

Note: I know somebody who uses the Tachyon and it makes great videos also...

Link to a couple videos shot with the Contour HD 720.....

Thanks Zug, very informative post.

Another question:

7. Where do you mount the camera (left side, right side, top?) and why?

Doc

I have never mounted it on top, I prefer left side. If you get the angle right you can see the marker and the target. If you use the right side most of the time the hopper gets in the way of seeing the target. I'm still experimenting with various camera mounting locations. I really haven't tried mounting directly to the marker because I think it makes for weird audio and then you end up with video of the ground a lot.

I'm going to add a link to my earlier post with a raw eight minute file my son shot last weekend at Combat Paintball in Wisconsin with it mounted on the right side and he's right handed.

Edit:
One other neat thing about the Contour is that if you have to mount at an angle the lens rotates 360 degrees to compensate. The informational video on Contour's website explains this.

I have a Tachyon helmet camera from www.tachyoninc.com
i have only had 1 problem with it so far, and despite the fact it was no longer covered under the warranty, they sent me a replacement shell so all i had to do is swap out the guts which was actually pretty damn easy..

its NOT HD, but it is Shock resistant, and water resistant.

the quality overall is pretty damn good, they even come with a few lens protectors if you put "Paintball Armor" in the comments section when you place your order. they only accept Pay Pal thou, and only ship USPS.. using pay pal does not really bug me, although i did not have a pay pal account when i ordered one so i had to set one up, and USPS does not have real time tracking, the page said it would be in my hands on a Monday, i got it right when i got home from work on a saturday (and i even checked the tracking # before i left work and it still said it would arrive monday)

i have over 8 helmet camera vids posted on youtube from Living Legends, 2 Testing videos, and many more FPS footage from playing open rec games. all of which can be found on my youtube channel : www.youtube.com/user/pcorcoran89

the camera comes with a goggle strap, a general mount, and some 3M dual locking strips

Legends was the first time i used the helmet camera in a game, i actually purchased a new mask (JT camo Elite mask) cause the goggle strap mount did not fit very well on my proto mask, but the visor for my proto mask broke so i was looking to buy a new mask anyways... the goggle mount also only works for the right side of your mask (and me being a right handed shooter you see alot of my marker/hopper while im shooting in the living legends vids)

but if you flip the mount upside down and add some extra 3M to the mount and mask, and just rotate your video 180 degrees, all is good. i also did a quick video on this as well.

in the end, i spent EXACTLY $200 for this device.

$160 for the camera from Tachyon
$40 for a class 6 16gb SDHC card from amazon.com

now i think the price is up a little bit since i purchased mine, but they also have Tachyon Micro helmet cams (basically a smaller version of what i have) for aound $130

now as for the Eliminations.. i have never taken a direct hit soo far to the camera, so i cant really pin anything on it 100% but recently i did take a shot to the mount for the camera, so i guess you can say it CAN cause eliminations, but all the bad ass stuff you can get yourself doing and be able to brag about it to your friends and on youtube pretty much justifies the purchase in my opinion.

I'm not concerned about the camera adding target area.
I'm 6' 5"...............

I was just wondering how you would go about cleaning your camera, and how much 'detail' work you have to put into it....

God Bless,
Doc

make sure its closed up and put it in water =)

some divers actually use tachyon helmet cams.. i usually carry a microfiber anyways in my vest, and where i play i know almost all the refs so they generally let me walk well into another field thats not being played on to take my mask off and clean it if i have too (most the time when im shot in the mask some of the paint finds its way onto the lens armor) otherwise you can just pull the camera off your mask and do it, but i would have someone help you put it back on.

here is a more recent vid i have posted up from playing 2 weeks ago

and this is my "mounting tips" video

it holds pretty good for being upside down with the 3M in place, first time i did that i had zip ties on it to make sure it wouldnt go anywhere, but 2 weeks ago when i played, i did it without zip ties, and it did not fall or move one bit.

and yes, that is the US_ARMY_GUY from this forum in the pump play vid..

I've had good luck with my Tachyon Micro, video quality is good unless your in low light, but sound it pretty bad due to the "waterproof" feature, meaning the mic is sealed inside where it can't really pick up any sound. Haven't taken a hit yet, but it's advertised as shockproof and I've dropped it a few times without damage.

I mount it with 3m "uber velcro," still experimenting with what side to put it on. Left side right now, works pretty fair for woodsball but in speedball you just get good closeups of bunkers or hopper. I have a small test video uploaded to my fields facebook group page, just a short one-on-one and I uploaded it to see how it would look online but it'll give you an idea of the quality. video

Overall I would recommend it but it's not HD so if your looking for the higher resolution it's probably not for you. I was looking at the Contour HD ones, but little pricey for me at the moment.

According.. to Mike from TechPB..

his ContourHD fell off his mount and shattered like glass on the ground... (@ Living Legends 3)

and i have seen vids of people racing on crotch rockets wipe out and the thing kept going.. soooo for durability..

Tachyon FTW

Ok,
I have a serious problem.

I cannot download my helmet cam film to my computer's ""Media editing program"" and keep the sound. It tranfers the video, but NO sound.

The camera films in .MOV files, the editing program is Easy Media Creator Suite 10.

What do I have to do? Buy a file converter?
Get a different editing program?

What program do you use?

What file types is your program compatable with?

HELP.

If you still wonder about cleaning I clean my electronics with rubbing alcohol. I keep a bottle and swabs with me. It'll clean and dry without a residue.
