Not trying to be a jerk, but smoothbore rifles utilized at a minimum, a front leaf sight to use as an aiming reference. Same thing with shotguns, they have a front bead to serve as a reference point. You need to be able to use different aiming methods at different distances. The sighting method that's appropriate for a CQB confrontation and the sighting method that's appropriate for an advancing target 100 feet away are not the same. There are different methods of indexing the shot.

Also, there's a reason the military and law enforcement use holo sights on their weapons. They provide very quick target acquisition and are good for engagements from 1-150yds.

Easiest way to aim with iron sights. Match your front peg sight to your rear leaf sight so that all you see is a flat line from behind the sight. To make aiming easier, put some white paint on the rear portion of the front peg sight. Then you put that sight picture on your target, using the painted peg to place on your target. Your chances of hitting your target are significantly increased.
