Alright I was refing a bachelor party (1st problem) so there was a bunch of drinking (2nd Problem) and smoking some pot (3rd Problem) [we had a turn the head policy to these things]. And our matches are about 3 hours long we are about 2.5 hours in the game and I was checking in at the safe zone (I forgot how many were out :() and somebody snuck up behind the zone and shot at the safe zone.

Lucky for him and me my back was turned or else he would have been banned and I would have been shot in the eye (safe zone so mask was off) and heres the kicker I never caught him and they scampered off too quickly for me to poll the players.

Cheers,
K. Fusion

Hmm, I don't really have any great stories.

I've had multiple instances of people shooting at me <_< , masks being taken off ;) , or funny newbie stories (you know what I'm talking about :D ), but nothing good in particular.

my worst reffing incedent came in a speed ball game. i was a few feet from a unoccupied bunker and was watching a guy try to make his way to it. i had paint checked him and my presence was known, so he finally gets in the bunker and goes into hide mode (he hid behind it not moving for several minutes) i quit paying attention to him and was surveying other action when this guy pops up and shoots me point blank (like 3ft away) behind the ear and ducks back behind cover!

i was so hot i relieved him of his marker and escorted him to the parking lot (gave it back to him at his car). he swore he thought i was in play even though i had on a blaze orange ref uniform and had paint checked him and had been walking around him the entire game. i told him that his attention span was so short that he was a danger to the other players and he needed to take up tennis or something.

accidents happen and getting hit while reffing is part of the job, but i dont have much tolerance for idiots.

I Ref a lot on my own field, It's a good way to see the game first hand. One game a little while ago one team split up into 3, two man teams. Two of the teams ran into each other and got into a battle. They had color arm bands, but I guess they didnt take the time to see they were the same. They fought for about 8 min. till they finally figular out they were on the same team. It was a good battle and no one was hit. They were talking when their third team hear the noise and came up and started to take them on. I was lol so hard tears were coming out. They didnt take any of their players out and ending up winning the game. There's a lot of good times being a ref, and this was one.

I got a few...

I was reffing a Xball game, and I happend to be the one who had to lay down in the middle. If you've ever had to do this when there were D2 teams playing...then you know the intensity of it. Well, I was doing fine...and I was laying about 7ft in front of a pillow, near the X, and I had just turned my back on the pillow when the guy who was behind it came out shooting. Now, he starts shooting before he brings the gun up, and FWAP...right in the buttocks. I couldn't jump up and such, so I had cringed in a ball but still kept facing the X at the player who got hit.

Another time...oh boy. We had a group of Deaf Mutes playing, mixed with some former Soviet Army dudes (Both these groups were armed with old markers, Nelsons, one had a Grey Ghost, and such). The deaf guys were mowing down people ALL day, even took on a D2 teams and beat them a few times. The Russian guys...were nucking futs. They were awesome, too. Great guys to play with and ref.

Well, anyways, not long after our first break, a blue short bus comes barreling down the driveway. It has metallica blaring. It stops and this guy in a white painter's jump suit comes out and around to the back, opens the door, and another 10 guys in the same attire jump out, painters masks and all. Well...they had brought beer. Lots of it, but cheap stuff. Sadly, my boss turned his head to this. As the night went by...they got more wasted. Out on the field I feared for the worst. So the drunk painters (They really were painters, it was a local company) took on the Deaf guys and Russians.

Off the break, one of the painters made a mad dash for the X, which had a pillow bunker on either side. He dove OVER the bunker and under the X...but got bunkered in the process. The painters were not shooting too great, they seemed to like orange targets instead of the opposite team. And they complained about being out when their markers were hit. A lot of them were taking their masks off, and we would run in and slap them down over their face. A few even fell over on to the bunkers because they couldn't balance themselves at all.

In one of the games, I went to go paint check one of the deaf guys. Being deaf, he couldn't hear me come up to him. I guess I scared him because he jumped, turned and shot me literally point blank in the chest. Not his fault, but damn.

I have more...but not for now.

we had a "SPECIAL" ref at one game i went to he was letting the opposing team use him as a shield and said im gonna kick u off the field if u shoot me(to me) i was still shooting past him and i said if there gonna use u as a shield and shoot past u ill do the same. i kept telling him to get out f the was he dident so after i hit him with like 20 shots he finally moves. and he got fired from reffing the field.

thought he was gonna kick me off the field that was so funny. lmao.
Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without u would still have good men doing good things and evil men doing evil things. But for good men to do evil things... That takes Religion

Ah... Time for my favorite anti-wiping story.

As all of you should know, I carry a pistol while reffing. You'd be surprised how much less people are inclined to argue with you when you're the ref with the gun.

I carry it for that reason, and mostly to avoid cheating, but if someone feels the need to shoot me, or wipe a hit, I'll make sure that hit magically makes its way back onto them.

I was reffing a walkon group, and for the most part we have a regular group of upstanding players. However, you get all kinds at a paintball field, as any player can tell you. Well, this one guy seemed rather new, and he was in his 30s, so I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to him. As the fight centered around the beach, he got behind a bunker with a window, and took one in the arm through the hole. He then proceeded to wipe the hit. I wasn't more that 15 feet behind him at the time that he decided to do that.

So, I draw my pistol from the holster, I didn't feel the need to point it at him in a threatening manner, but it being out of the holster was enough. I walked up behind him, with the pistol in clear view, he heard me coming once I was about 5 feet behind him, turns around, looks at me, then the pistol, then me again. He took his barrelbag, put it on his marker and walked off. Not a word was said. He knew what he did, there was no argument, and I didn't feel the need to chastise him.

Another time, playing on one of our more heavily wooded fields, which is set up in an attack/defend design, some Einstein of a player decides he should use his smoke grenade. Which, of course, was a non-field approved (we don't allow any smoke grenades, or exotics) device. Not to mention it was hot burning. He must have threw it directly into a pile of leaves, and it promptly started a fire. So, with much shouting and whistle blowing, another ref and I put out the fire, and managed to stop the game at the same time. Of course, I was the one who got to pick up the still burning smoke grenade. Wonderful isn't it? Luckily she (the other ref) took care of the player, with much shouting, told him to go home and he walked off without much of an argument.

Luckily (again) the field surrounds a lake, so the smoke grenade was easy enough to diffuse, I simply dunked it in the lake, then left it with the players in the dead-box to assure that no other fires would start. We finished the game in progress, and no one got hurt.

I have more stories of course, I'll add more later.

last weekend i had customer head butt another customer whilst still wearing their masks, had to grab thise rather HUGE Samoan dude and attempt to push him back, it was like i wasnt even there, the dude he head butted ran off into the bush when we went after him, he was ready to swing the rental marker at myself and another referee.

ive seen a dude lift his goggles, and about 2 cms above his eye, take a hit to the eye brow,

you name it ive prolly seen it or had some idiot ask it
dont make people a priority, who are only making you an option

Reffing speedball game, I slide into the snake to check a guy, he thinks he's about to get bunkered by me, Mr. Superman, so he acts first... You get the picture.

I have always wondered this question...

Why do people have that urge to shoot at the bright orange or black and white ref jersey? Is there something that I am not seeing, other than the player shooting at me?

Because usually those people can't hit moving or hiding targets...so they aim for the ones in clear view, standing still.

Yeah, that seems to be a problem. We get lots of new players where I ref, so many of them are still on the "shoot anything that moves" mode. <_<

On the other hand, lots of them are too scared to stick their heads out of their bunker to even shoot at me. B)

i've reffed a few games, not going into details but i now carry a towel with me....

ive only shot up a ref once, it was in a woodsball game, he was wearing camoflauge!,

QUOTE from PBNation
"yea this one time i was shooting this guy in a orange shirt and he wounlt go out!, the cheaters these days are getting bad!" (joke!)

Ok i'll tell you the towel story!

I was going to do a paintcheck and i caught about 5 in the side, so yell ref, and proseed to check the player, he was clean so i wave my hands, im walking way and three more in the chest, so this guy is ticking me off, so i walk over to check him, no he didnt shoot me agian but i guess i just walked across at the wrong time and was the reciveing end of some paint. the towel really really helps!

But ive had some fun reffing too, when people argue about hits, most of the time in jest, once i got gogged and walked away asked the ref, "where's the hit?" he laughed, "what the goggle hit? thats old!" i love having fun with the refs!
