The Proflex is probably the least protective of all paintball masks. A local player had their eardrum burst last year becasue they were using those tiny softears that are so popular now. A paintball hit at just the right spot to send a burst of air down his ear canal. Ear protection is much more important than lower face protection, IMO.

When I started playing, they had the masks with just the frontal protection. I didn't get hit with a direct shot but the shell of the paintball sliced my ear up pretty good. Anything less than full ear/eye/mouth protection is unacceptable

I had one of my ear pieces fall out somhow and I lost it. I wore a banclava and I managed to get shot right square in the ear. My ear swelled up a little bit that day and it was fine once I woke up. :\

A teammate of mine was playing yesterday while I was refereeing. He was using Spectra goggles like always. (An airsofter, you know he's near you because you can smell the propane) In one of the games he came out with a bloody nose due to a hit.

He took the pain. It's up to him - I'd never play like that, but if he's okay with having his nose bloodied by paintballs, far be it from me to stop him. He went out and played the same way the next game.

I have a full head protection mask by JT, and I have to say that although I may not look AGG, I have to say that when I get a headshot, ear shot, etc, I don't really feel it. Its nice not to hurt when some guy gets you good.

If the person on the other end of your gun does not walk away from the game eagerly anticipating the next game because of your actions,
you have failed as a paintballer. Put this in your sig to help spread the word.

I think for many people, it's a comfort thing. Being shut into a headshield mask isn't for everyone. I know I'll take slight sacrifices in hit protection for a bit of comfort. Case in point, my visor - it protects my forehead, but it sometimes interferes with my stickfeed.

Bingo, I've been hit on the head before just messing around (read, drills) and it wasnt that bad so why put my head in a sauna.

My field has pretty strict rules about masks...in fact we banned a guy just last Saturday for refusing to keep his mask down, as well as other offenses.

Personally, I go for maximum head protection (I use a JT Elite Head Shield w/ thermal lens) even though it gets up to 100+ very easily out here in NE Ok. I'll go out and ref a couple games and then head into the pro shop and sit in front of the air conditioner while the players are reloading and talking about the game. I'd rather be uncomfortable than take a head shot at close range.

Yeah sorry no on all accounts, I've been playing and reffing far too long to allow anyone to play with any but a regulated mask, I don't care if you're Tom Kaye himself you're either in a full mask or going home. I seend and gotten split lips from shells just breaking and getting threw my grill to think what a full round could do to some of the softest skin on the human body... Yeah no.
