The FRS ones can't handle terrain all that well, and when you put hundreds of players in the same field, interceptions/interference/a ton of morons on all frequencies is guaranteed.

heck i got a pair of frs radios at best buy that came with a charger and what not and they seemed to work pretty good at LL3

If you plan on attending larger events then then best option is the UHF/VHF radios. As Thalion mentioned, it will eliminate the issue of multiple teams/players on your teams "channel" - allowing clear communication.
If you are using radios in a larger event just to keep in communication w/ your general & not for your teams coordination, then a FRS/GMRS radio would be fine to be able to listen in... assuming that is what the general is using.
