My friend who I will be paintballing tomorrow ordered a set of military grade ballistics goggles and a balaclava for his face, last week or so. The goggles are supper tough but the balaclava is just a 1/4 inch soft foam and I'm worried that he could get a tooth or 2 knocked out, or worse a paintball in his throat if it doesn't hold up to a shot. He had a tooth knocked out long ago by a ball skipping a rock into his face (he was only wearing goggles then). I by no means intend to aim for his head if we are on opposing teams, and I doubt anyone would if they have a clear body shot, but often times in a firefight, your face and gun can be the only things exposed.

He is considering buying a mask, but we could end up with an extra player, and they would end up with the balaclave all the same.

DO NOT PLAY WITHOUT A PAINTBALL MASK! End of story. It's just not safe.
Team Krisis
You gas up the marker, put on the gloves, strap on the mask, and walk onto the field.. it doesn't matter that you failed a test, that your girlfriend broke up with you last night, or that you got a ticket on the way there...your world is right for the next couple hours, this is your heaven on earth... live it... love it..

How the hell could you stop me? Why in the world would you try? I go hard forever that's just how I'm designed, that's just how I was built.

hi, im 1-i, do you know why my name is 1-i? its easy, i only have 1 good eye now
why do i have just one eye?
its simple
I DIDNT PLAY WITH PROPER PAINTBALL FACE AND EYE PROTECTION!!
you cant get around a proper face mask
not wearing one could make your depth perception go suddenly bad or you could get dead.
dead is not good
dead is not alive, dead is dead
dont get dead

get a proper face mask for you guy or dont let him play
face masks are made for a reason and have to meet certain criteria.
their simply is no subsitute for proper face gear.

Hello 1-I, I read your story when I first joined the forums, its one of the reasons I posted this. Just to clarify, my friend will be wearing the goggles with the balaclava (god thats hard to spell). From when I last talked to him, I gather he will be getting a new mask for tomorrow. I will talk to him tonight when he gets here about it.

Goggles--The Most Important Piece Of Gear You Will Own

With hundreds of paintballs traveling 200 miles per hour across the field, there is only one thing that will protect you eyes from severe injury--your goggles system. The statistics bear it out, more than 99% of all serious paintball injuries occur when players use the wrong type of goggles, or no goggles at all. Here' the most important thing you need to know. Never wear anything but goggle/mask systems made specifically for paintball.

Never wear shop goggles, ski goggles, military goggles, motmcross goggles, or any other goggles that are not designed for paintball. They simply will not have the impact resistance or total eye coverage necessary to stop 13 balls per second coming at you.

Even military goggles are only really designed for protection from sand, dust, and light flying debris. The only thing that is specifically designed for paintball play is just that, paintball goggles.

While I do whole heartedly support using full face masks, I do want to point out that most military grade eye goggles are ANSI Z87 rated, meaning these things are made for taking the impact of shrapnel flying much faster than any paintball. Most paintball masks in fact have a similar rating. As long as the eye goggles are rated, he should be fine as far as his eyes. The rest of his face, however, will be in a world of pain if he gets hit in the face at all.

I would think after getting hit in the teeth once he would learn to get a full face mask.

Get. A. Paintball. Mask.

I know that the goggles are rated and stuff but please just get a paintball mask. Mask companies design full maks for a reason and players wear them for a reason. BEACAUSE IT HURTS LIKE HELL TO GET HIT IN THE FACE! Even with the baclava thingy. (which I thought you meant the dessert by the way)

Mask, I completely agree with everybody here. A shot in the ears could do serious damage to your hearing. Enough said.

1-I, on a different note, I read your story, and that completely changed my views on paintball. One of the most important threads on this forum.

The ear damage is a big worry. Always wear a mask. End of story. No chance for argument. You are stamping yourself an idiot by not wearing one.

Yes. Masks cover eyes and ears for a reason. I think you can go deaf if you get hit in the ear.

I've seen people get hit without a mask on and its not pretty (we've shunned them).

Speaking of which, I have many masks I need to sell. :P

If he insists on wearing just eye goggles with a balaclava I would refuse to play paintball with him.

I have a Balaclava and all it does is keep your head warm from the cold and if your friend thinks he'll be safe by jus wearing Eye Goggles and a Balaclava...hes got another thing comin, because 2 things will happen:

1. He will start sweatin like crazy as if he was standing in a Steam Room

2. Paintball hits below the Eye Goggles will break on impact (no doubt about that) and also along wit the impact, a paintball can fracture or break Cheek Bones, Jaw Bone and Teeth.

So, if you friend wants to look like he got himself in the Ring wit Mike Tyson, thats on him!
