every source i have ever seen classifies UV as either A, B, or C
http://www.hps.org/h...rticles/uv.html

alpha beta and gamma are types of radiation, along with xrays, UV rays, and visible light. the a,b and c in this case are subgroups of UV.

If she really wants a good tan she should start running. It keeps you in shape and can give you an amazing tan at the same time.

Yes. UV radiation messes up your cells.

What I don't get then is why the heck our government wouldn't try to close these places down?? Or at least make the places warn their customers of what it may cause.

Ciggarettes cause cancer too..and those aint ever going to be outlawed

Ok so one of my friends has been going to a tanning salon lately because she "hates her pale skin" even though half the girls at our school are more white than her. Coincidentally, in our Health class today we studied sun burns and Skin Cancer. It said one big thing that causes it is tanning salons and being the worry wort I am I started freaking out cause last year my grandma died of cancer and I'm really tired of all this cancer crap you know? I told her about it and she just rolled her eyes about it and said she was going to continue going. Are Tanning Salons really that bad? And if so what the heck do I to do to try and convince her to stop going? Thanks.
(Many apologies if I just wasted your time....)

They really are that bad. You're blasting your body with UV rays. What part of that sounds safe? Maybe there are some medical benefits and maybe it is controlled, but it's still pretty direct exposure. It does feel good, but fake tans are lame. Tell your friend if she wants to attract a decent guy she should ditch the tanning bed and spend more time outside and develop a natural tan, which look a lot better in my opinion, I hate fake tans. It's one thing to want color before a vacation, but to tan yourself often is pretty BOINKed up. Especially when girls go way too dark.

Several years down the road, her skin is going to be really gross...

Same reason Alchohol and Tobacco are legal.

Why I don't like tanning beds: It ages your skin. When they get older they'll look terrible. I call them "Skin Cancer Machines." I find overly tan skin extremely unattractive anyway.

I love this thread. I am so anti-tanning. If you're out doing something, and you get tan, by all means, rock on. Just be safe. Don't get super burned. But these chicks who go tanning a lot (even once a month is a lot for me) just irritates me. I'd honestly rather have a natural looking girl than a super tanning bed girl with brunette hair bleached blonde. Any time my female friends go tanning, I always get on their case. They're paying for cancer. It baffles my mind.

I wouldn't worry about it. Skin Cancer is easy to see and easy to treat. It's not fun, but not worth freaking out about the possibility.

:)

Easy to see? only if its on your arms or the front of your body. Youre screwed if its on your back...
Easy to treat? Thats why people die from it right?

Yeah. I've known 14 people diagnosed with skin cancer that are fine now. I've known 0 that died. That's just my experience though.

And I'm sure that they are in great financial shape after paying for the treatment to cure them aren't they?

Considering that I work with Radiation every day and know the perks and quirks of it I can say this.

DO
NOT
CHANCE
IT.

True, THEY say it won't hurt you much.

True, most people that do it might not even see any affects of it.

But you know what?

What happens when you hit 35 and they are cutting chunks off of your ears?

Will you still continue going to the salon once a week then?

I can't stop you, but I can warn you.

God Bless,
Doc
