So after 3 months of not being himself, we brought my golden retriever to the vet so he could "Be put to sleep". They said he had cancer and he was to far a long in it to intervene. It was hard to say goodbye and impossible to want to watch them "putting him to sleep". No matter how you phrase it, killing your dog is still sad and depressing. It kind of sounds like when you want to hide death from a kid and you say "he ran away". The next logical question is, "Will he come back?" And of course the euphemism falls apart. Also pardon me if i use some, I have taken off from work today to do this and I am a bit off.

I despise hiding what you want to say behind colorful phrases that just dance around the topic. Things such as , "She slept with him" are pretty bad also. I mean they did not get in their PJs and decide to take a nap together.

But our language is covered with these things. Adult Entertainment, Neutralize, and many others come to mind.

So besides my depressing rant, what are some of your most hated ways of coloring a conversation to not sound so real and to the point.

You have a good point, which I agree with. I try to say things how they are. E.g., I don't tell people oh they slept together or something, its just dumb. There is no point in trying to put what you say in a nicer way because it still means the same thing.

Also, sad to hear about your dog, they really grow on you. I hope you feel better.

They "went to heaven" ... we haveno idea what, if anything happens after death.

I am sorry for your loss of your pet. They really do become like your children, and I am sure that when my "puppy" goes, there will will days of great sorrow and tears for me.

Sorry you lost a friend. Sometimes euphemisms are more truthful than you think. Your trip to the vet wasn't to kill your friend, but to spare him the suffering on his way to the inevitable. You committed the ultimate, hardest act of kindness, not murder. Think about that, then tell us which words are closer to the truth. ;)

"See a man about a horse sounds more polite" than "Holy Balls I gotta piss."

"Adjusting the antenna" sounds nicer than "Beating it like I caught it breaking into my house."

Although, I like to use the more creative language to see how many blushes I can get.
