so I took apart a gravity fed hopper today, your standard black ones, but none of hte ones that I've used have ever had a little spring inside, I'm not sure how it's suppose to be placed back in. any ideas?

that is for the lid on the hopper to keep it open for you. It usually goes around the pin used to hold the lid on, and gets held in place by the sides of the hopper being tightened around it

I got as far as it being to keep the lid open, but when I put in the only way that it would fit and put everything together it doesn't acutally do anything...so I figure I must have done something wrong,

Make sure that the little ends that do the pushing are facing the right way. So that they put pressure against the cap keeping it open, not backwards, where they'd do nothing. Like itlooks like a spring but with two little ends sticking out. Put it in so those ends have tension on them when it's closed.

I think the real question is...why are you taking apart a gravity fed hopper?
Most (some?) of them will have two little holes for the spring. It kind of depends how it's made.

If I can find a hopper with a lid that isn't a speed feed tomorrow, I'll post pictures to explain.

i took it apart because they guy I was cleaning it for leaves his leftover paint in it, including when paint breaks for a few months at a time...so it needed more than just a rinse out and wipedown.

Next time just get some soap and water in there, put your hand on the bottom so it doesn't get out, and shake it. That's what I always did when I used gravity fed hoppers.

I tried such things...most of his gear required a lot of scrubbing with a toothrbruch and soapy water...I got it back together eventaully though, if I had just waited till morning I could have figured it out myself.

Good picture of how the spring should look when re-assembling... this pic is of an Empire Prophecy but you get the idea... right?
